Bentley has demodex AGAIN Bentley went in for his yearly checkup and has demodex really bad AGAIN!! We are currently in the process of blood work and research to figure out why an otherwise healthy dog keeps becoming infected with an immune system mite. Does anyone know of a canine HIV or AIDS virus that causes immune system compromises? That's a lot of what this sounds like but you never know what we'll find or come up with. My heart breaks that he's itching still and can't beat this for good. Poor boy. Prayers are very appreciated especially since we have been struggling financially since our son was born and just dropped over $300 for Bentley's shots and skin tests and blood work. We'll be fine, just takes away from some of the things we are trying so hard to save for. I'm working again as a para in summer school and sub teaching some, but not enough that we have extra money. Hoping we can pin point this problem and beat it and not end up in a never ending pit of no answers and money to find out what this is. Poor Bentley. |
Have you ever considered a raw diet? Many people have had success boosting the immune system with this sort of a diet.... My collie actually had a bought with demodex mites and it cleared up with the raw diet maybe it would've cleared on it's own but it made a believer out of me.... |
My brothers dog had this...it is difficult to get rid of, and requires treatment at least 3-4 months AFTER ANY SKIN SCRAPINGS COME BACK NEGATIVE...every single mite must be killed or it will return with a vengence.Whatever you do, do NOT put cortisone cream on any of his lesions...that exacerbates the rash and it will erupt feriously. He had to bathe his dog once a week with special shampoo, dab lesions with special solution, and took Ivermectin by mouth for months...then he was on medication to boost his immune system. After a year or more, he finally got this stuff cured.....and he had it horribly.... |

What 'shots' are you referring to? If they were vaccines, you may want to consider holding off on those until his immune system is stronger -- but keep him protected from other dogs/outside etcetera. Maybe you meant some other kind of shots. When they're retesting him - are they doing skin scrapes only? Bc w/ resistant mites - they will often BURROW under the skin and aren't visible on scraping...burrowed mites can only be found via biopsy of the skin. Maybe a biopsy would tell you something...? So sorry he's going through this, poor little kiddo :(. |

Also meant to ask -- is Bentley getting the standard yeast infection that often happens to dogs post-mite treatment? If he is...I wonder how that's contributing to the whole cycle... |

Poor little guy! Yet another thing I've found out about on YT! i'm new to yorkies and three quarters of these stuff these babies can get I've never heard of. I hope they can beat this once and for all. |
so we're on a higher dosage of ivermectin internal liquid meds for 120 days this time. the longest ever. and by shots i meant his heartworm test, fecal, and kennel cough up nose. he also got rabies. he's now on a natural immune booster. put sadie on it too. he's not feeling well today, spit up breakfast and some water but has been fine since this morning. think the meds are just really strong. can't do raw diet on him, makes him really sick. i used to do that but don't change their foods anymore since they are both finally thriving on the food they both eat and have no tummy troubles on it. thanks for prayers. we'll keep going on this. nothing shown in blood work so he's otherwise healthy just stubborn demodex. |
The Ivermectin has to be increased in increments, slowly, or THAT will make him sick....did they do that? I would not be giving any more vaccines until he is finished with this treatment...certainly does NOT need any heartworm preventative, as that is what Ivermectin is.....May consider Milk Thistle...that detoxifies the liver as you bombard his system with these meds designed to kill those resilient mites. It took my brother over a year to cure his beagle...but he did get over it! |
oh wow i hope this doesn't take a year. we're still going strong on the meds. they did gradually increase the meds over time. .27 now. he's doin good. stopped licking and seems comfortable it's just that i worry we'll never get over this. he also has something on his ear. not sure if ingrown hair or hematoma. tiny area with tiny scab and lump like thing. called vet, she said do neosporin and in a couple days if not gone bring him in. we'll see what that is all about soon i'm sure. just in the hole big time. our savings has been pretty well depleated between Bentley's bills and Luke's bills. we're in the poor house but at least it's a house of happiness and love and wellness for now. |
The secret to SUCCESSFULLY treating/curing this affliction, is to continue for at least 3 months AFTER all skin scrapings and hair follicles come back NEGATIVE!! My brother also switched his dog to heartworm med whose active ingredient was Ivermectin.....hang in there....it can be resolved!...but if you stop early, before every mite is dead, it comes back with a vengence! |
Update Still on meds for demodex. BUT good news is the thing on his ear is NOT anything to worry about. Just a bug bite or something. Pretty much all healed up now. And the lumps under his arm pits were just scabby places from the mites not anything either to be worried about. So we're just on meds and trying to get him comfortable while he's fighting these mites hard this time. he's tired but not acting abnormal which is good. on his immune boost vitamin to support that while fighting. |
Sounds like you are right on track....JUST DONT STOP....if you stop early, all this effort will have been for naught! My brothers dog was absolutely horrific, and we persisted with the treatment for at least a year...but he got ahead of it and FINALLY Sparky was cleared up!!! Those mites are persistant....and you are doing exactly what you need to do..attack them not only by meds to get rid of the mites, but shampoo/topical solution on his body to keep the sores and scabbed areas from secondary infection, and fortifying his immune system. Good job!!! |
