Potty-trained dog suddenly peeing all over the place Is it possible that a dog can drink so much water he can't control his bladdar? My yorkie is over 1 and a hilf years old, crate and potty trained. We are in Florida, and when we came home from the noon walk his tongue was hanging out, but he didn't want any water. To get him to drink some I put a dash of tuna-juice in it. He ran over and drank what was in the bowl, about a cup and a half of water. I had to leave and he was in his crate for about four hours at the most. When I let him out he immediately began peeing, in five different places. I took him for a walk as soon as I finished cleaning up and he did not lift his leg once to pee- but there were little droplets coming from him for a bit. Since we came home he did not drink more, and was very calm- sat on the couch next to me. I got up to fill his chewy with his food and when I returned he had peed all over the cushion I was sitting on. I have not yelled or discilpined him for any of these accidents, as it may have been my fault and I don't do that anyway, I just cleaned it up. Right now he is laying by my feet, and seems unusally quiet, even dejected. Can a dog go from healthy, trained and happy to sick overnight like that, or did I just screw him up by enticing him to drink too much water? I realize waiting until tomorrow will probably answer all of this, it is just worrying me, I want him to be happy. |
It sounds like he might have a urinary tract infection which can cause frequency of urination like that. I'd bring him in as soon as possible to your vet to get checked out. He may very well need an antibiotic. I hope he's feeling better soon. |
Thank-you. Do UTIs come on so suddenly like that? He was fine just yesterday, even this morning was energetic, held it until the morning walk just fine. |
I don't know how quickly they come on but Hot Rod had one one time and I knew something was wrong after the he peed on the laundry room floor for the 2nd time in the same day while we were coming back in from a walk. Good luck and hope your baby feels better. |
Thank-you, I took him to the vets and will know tomorrow. |
He may have been burning for a while but didn't get really inflammed, lose bladder control until now, if it is a UTI. Take his temp & keep a record of it until you get to the vet but go now if it is high. |
As sure as I'm typing this that pup has a UTI or similar...trust me, Miss Mini is the reigning queen of UTI and Vaginitis (not sure of name), and she does the same thing....usually I step in it as I'm getting out of the bed...I immediately get her in to the vet and sure enough...get to a vet! |
Thanks for the replies. At the vets I am not sure they even considered a UTI, before I brought him in he was acting so strangely lethargic. I took him for another walk to see if he would perk up, and he did to an extent but he couldn't walk solidiy, was wavering from side to side and just - I can't even explain it. I found an animal emergency hospital and rushed him there, by now I was convinced he had been poisoned. The vet said his vitals were normal but he has signs of toxicity. They put a water-pack in him to flush it out and he got quite a bit better (about 60% of normal). I took him home and kept an eye on him, gave him a short walk at midnight. He still wasn't quite right but still a lot better. The next day (Saturday) he continued to improve and by the evening walk was back to normal strength and energy. |
Zachary was fine when we brought him home from the breeder but in a week, he was peeing all over. Took him to the vet and he had a UTI. He is fine now. We also have a almost 1 year old male Japanese Chin that was paper trained (because of our age and health issues, all our dogs are paper trained although some DO go out too) and suddenly he started holding his urine for a long time and then peeing anywhere. Took him to the vet and it was NOT a UTI but the vet suspected a behavioural issue (this happened BEFORE we got Zachary so it's not jealousy). I read that if you have a sensitive dog (Yumble is) and harp on them for peeing in the wrong place, they will stop peeing at all or at least in the front of you. We have been working him and have found he will pee on the papers MOST of the time if nobody is in the room. And they say these guys aren't smart.... Louise |
Raelle has taken to peeing when my son is home from college...like right now. Usually on the couch!!! Then I have the added bonus of Orion marking right on top of where she just went.....uuurrghhh!!! i think with Raelle its either submissive wetting or nerves....how do i fix this?? I now need to replace my couch cuz it stinks!!! Yes i have tried urine out..natures miracle and others...it still stinks!! So before i get a new couch and risk it stinking as well i need to correct the problem first...help please |
:thumbup::thumbup: NOW the question is: WHAT KIND OF POISON/TOXIC SUBSTANCE DID THE PUP GET INTO, AND WHERE DID HE GET INTO IT AT???? You have a big job ahead of you....you have to find the toxin...did they do a toxicology screen on him?? That would let you know what he got into...insecticide? lawn care chemicals? bite of some kind? plant toxin? grooming product? flea control? Good luck but you now should be on a seek and search mission! Quote:

When mine started peeing in her sleep at night I took her to the vet and she had bladder stones. |
I was thinking he'd eaten something. Did you mean it when you say he drank a cup and a half of water (at one time?)!! No wonder he pee'd everywhere! Something made him need/want to drink all that. tuna-juice in the water? Could that cause a problem with toxicity? How much and was it a freshly opened can? I hope you figure it out so it doesn't happen again |
Hi Maggie, No, sorry it wasn't quite that much, I was frantic when posting before. It was a can I just opened and put a few drops of the tuna water in his bowl of water. Then I made a sandwich from it, it was not bad tuna. Here is the thing, I walk him regularly. That is not going to change. So, until I become Queen and ban all dangerous substances and plants (did you see the list?) from the neighborhood there isn't much I can do other then keep an extra careful eye on him and pull him away from anything he opens his mouth near. The treatment administered from the vet flushed out the toxin and made him better, so they said the tox screen most likely will not find anything. The important thing is that we know where the nearest emergency clinic for him is and are now registered there. He is back to his normal, active, sweet self. Thank-you for asking! |
Glad he is feeling better. |
