Our very sick new puppy. HELP!?

Recently, for me and my fiance's anniversary, I was blessed with a 1.4lb 2 month puppy, whom we named Gracie, as a gift. We got Gracie home and the first two days were fine. On the third day I was showing her to my parents and my dad put her on his shoulders while he was lying down on the floor and she jumped off. The jump was a very short fall but she managed to hurt her front paw. She was limping around so we decided to take her to ER in the morning. The doctor prescribed us Metecam and said he couldn't feel any breakage of the leg. I started injecting the Metecam into her mouth as soon as we came home. I noticed Gracie had thrown up on herself in the morning and I once again called my vet. I took her to see him and he advised just simple to take her off the medicine. A few hours later nothing had changed and she kept throwing up for the next two days. I rushed her then again back to the vet and he told me she was extremely hypoglycemic. I noticed her gums and tongue were white and she had zero energy. He gave her a shot for nausea and kept her for a few hours. He told me just to force feed her 3cc of soft a/d dog food every 2-3 hours which me and my fiance have done religiously since. Now, we're noticing the vomiting has stopped but she doesn't want to eat anything still, lethargic, wobbly, urinating a lot, and looks very depressed. I baby her all the time and have went over and beyond to make our Gracie comfortable and happy. We really aren't sure what else to do. We love Gracie but all this has happened in only a weeks period we really are running out of options. Please help!

I'm very sorry.:(

Has bloodwork been done on this pup aside from glucose? If not, it needs to be done today.

She really needs to go to the vet and definitely needs to have labs done. Where are you in Texas? If you are close to me, I could help out with a good vet referral if you need one.

KimInMD 06-08-2012 10:13 AM

Yeh, Metacam can have that side effect. Side effects in animals are similar to those found in humans; the principal side effect is gastrointestinal irritation (vomiting, diarrhea and ulceration). Rarer but important side effects include liver and kidney toxicity. I wonder if she may be dehydrated. Did they give her any iv fluids? It could be, based on the symptoms you describe. This is part of the problem when you get one so tiny. We've all been there. Sounds like another trip to the vet may be in order. Praying your Gracie is feeling better soon.

You know, in reading this, I don't know that 3cc is enough food? I would definitely check that out.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. But again another vet visit is in order. These problems can turn out to be "not" so severe, but really trully can at the turn of a dime be life threatening.

Labs will need to be done. And yes she is small, but at this point it is so important to do.

I hope you now know the signs n symptoms of hypoglycemia, and can watch for, and prevent this.

Truly there are a whole host of things it could be; none of which can be ddx'd without some testing.

Please keep us updated we do care, and will be rooting for you and your gal!

Nb: good breeders generally do not let a puppy go to novice owners under 2 lbs and 12 wks old.

I hope you find out whats wrong with your puppy and shes all better soon

I'm sorry your new little one is sick:( Did the vet give you Nutrical or at least tell you about it? It is helpful to keep hypoglycemia at bay, and can help to stimulate the appetite. I don't think that is enough food, only 2cc's:eek: It should be more like 10, in my opinion. I went through this with my Luna and was talking to a great breeder (wish I had gotten my pup from her instead) but anyway she told me to mix up a certain formula and I swear it saved Luna's life. From what I know now, I would substitute goat's milk and water 50/50 instead of the half and half, but here is the thread that I posted waaaaayyy back then:

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...oglycemia.html

Keeping Gracie warm and hydrated is as important as feeding her.

Sending prayers that your little one will be okay:love:

LunasMomma 06-08-2012 11:52 AM

Just a quick not on the Nutrical. It's not good to over-use it, just a little bit right before you feed her will help get her tummy hungry for more. Also, if you use the babyfood/cereal formula, warm it up a little, don't give straight out of the fridge.

Keep us posted, please? We are all worrying with you:love:

My diggy had seizures from hypoglc. Very good formula posted above. My vet also took all stops off we went to all human food as diggy wouldn't eat dog food. Cheerios are a complex carb so those were a frequent treat soaked in water for the moisture. Scrambles eggs n rice with water added, very messy but helpful. water is huge in this. Complex carbs as well. A slow release of sugar is better than a rush high then a crash. I had food and fluids in diggys face 24/7. It's a horrible awful thing to go through but very treatable. Set your alarm thru the night and offer food hourly. He started gaining weight immediately and then his little body was able to stabilize his blood sugar levels by itself. Good luck. Message me if you need more help or have questions. Luckily I had a yorkie talker with experience on this who let me call her and question her for days lol kept me sain!

Oh No! I am so sorry sweetie, I pray she is ok. *Hugs from me and Ellie Mae* we will keep you in our prayers.

Hope your baby is doing better. As a side note though our vet told us that the appearance of white gums is a sign of dehydration. Is she getting plenty of water? If she isn't drinking use a syringe and make her drink.

Would love to know how Gracie is doing tonight?

ladyjane 06-08-2012 06:27 PM

White gums on a dog is indicative of a severe problem. Here is a link about checking dogs' gums:

As someone else mentioned, Do you have Nutrical ? if not get some ASAP & give it to her every couple of hrs till she starts eating on her own. I would get her to a teaching hospital ASAP. Please update as soon as you can as we all worry about every sick pup.
