Scared of Storms My Shian, is terrified of storms! When she was little my husband came home and took her out when it was storming badly. Thunder hit and scared her half to death. Now, four years later, she is still terrified. I have used calming gel from Petco and it used to work, but not anymore. Plus, the last time I used it, the next day she would not eat nor potty until late in the evening. What I need is some suggestions of something to give her, the first hint of a storm. She shakes so badly and pants so hard (she drools). Anything short of taking her to the vet for something, I will try first. Thanks a bunch, I just know someone else has this problem as well and can offer suggestions.:aimeeyork |

The 'Thundershirt' helps Gus a lot. |
The Thundershirt has pretty good reviews. In the meantime, you could try putting something snug on her like a tshirt or some jammies. I use shirts for my two, who are petrified, and it seems to calm them somewhat. I haven't gotten the Thundershirts for them yet since the regular tshirts seem to work fine. |
i heard the thundershirt works well// morgan has only heard thunder once and he barked up a storm/ not sure how he will handle it when 4 th of july comes around and when we start getting thunderstorms/ i might be getting him a thundershirt |
My Pixie 6 years old suddenly became terrified of thunder. The thundershirt helped a lot. She comes running to have it put on when she senses or hears thunder. The vet also gave me a natural calming liquid to give her and between the 2 she calms down within 10 minutes of using them. I think it is called Nauralcalm. |
I see everyone has recommended the ThunderShirt... Add me to that list. |
Tried the thunder shirt, didn't work! Where do I find, Children's Calms Forte and Rescue Remedy?? And what would be the dosage. She is about 10 pounds. Willing to try any thing. At a total loss and storms are due here within a few days. |
I also am interested in this. I googled it and found their website. I used their store located to find a retailer in my area. They can be found at Walgreens, Walmart and health food stores. I just don't know how much to give. Good luck with helping your little one find relaxation during those horrible thunderstorms. |

The Rescue Remedy I order mine online. Just make sure it is not the one with Alcohol. I myself actually use the Adult Calms Fotre every now and then. |
I have heard that rubbing their coat with a fabric softener sheet works ...has something to do with the static electricity from the storm...but it is the noise she's scared of maybe ask your vet for something...my parents little girl used to have to take xanax when a storm hit...only problem...she could hear the storm before my parents and by the time they gave her the pill she was already shaking...sometimes it didn't help... my little guy is terrified as well...I just hold him real close to me |
Re: Children's Calms Forte Did a little checking online, seems that I will be able to get the Calms Forte at Target. I will be going there tomorrow, for sure. I saw some drops at Petco, the other day, may go get that (along with the Calms Forte) until I can get some of the other ordered. Thanks so much!! I really appreciate all the suggestions. Just pray it works for her. Shiansmom |
Re:Shian I went to Target to get the Children's Calms Forte, of course they didn't have any. Said they had quit handling it several months ago. However, they did ask what I needed it for. I told them about Shian. All of the ladies behind the counter quickly started thinking. One lady said she had a boxer terrified of storms as well, and told me what she did. :lightning Benadryl is what she used, she said she used the tablets. I told her I thought Shian would prefer the liquid. Well, she also goes to the corner of the pharmacy and looks up something. Then she said "We can flavor that for you at no extra cost, would you like beef or bacon?" I said I thought bacon.:):)Well, I brought it home and was here about thirty minutes before the first rumble of thunder. I tried to get her to drink it. Oh, NO!! So, I poured it into her mouth.:aimeeyorkShe did not like it!.:thumbdown A little later the storm was cranking up louder, so I got the syringe they gave me and use that to measure and dispense. I worked like a charm!! She just laid down and paid no attention to the storm. I was so pleased and happy. So, a BIG THANK YOU, to the ladies at Jonesboro, AR, Target Pharmacy!!! I would have never thought that a pharmacy for people would go to such links to help a dog and especially flavor meds for it as well.:thumbs up |
Yogi gets upset when it thunders and trembles..i take him to the basement and he is fine down there |
I would go to the basement as well. But, unfortunately, we live in an upstairs apartment. And none of my children's homes have basements either. I'm glad that works for you and Yogi. He sure is a cute one.! |
