Pimple Like Bumps I've got a rather serious problem I need some assistance on. Avery has recently had these little pimple like bumps that started under his neck and are working his way all over his head. He recently had quite a few fleas on him, despite flea prevention, but after a good de-flea bath, he's flea free. However, these bumps persist. He seems to be itching his face/head more so I'm pretty sure they itch. Also, the kinda scab. It's not noticeable by just looking at him, but I feel them when I pet him. I've read that it could be an allergy... either way I think I'll call the vet, but I wanted some semi-experienced opinions. If it is an allergic reaction to fleas, or something else, is this an easy, fairly reasonable treatment? |
When Ziva was little she got a row of little bumps at the base of her ears and down her neck. I was using puppy shampoo and just not rinsing well enough. Now I rinse more than I wash and than one more time! |

If a dog continues to itch after you're positive that no fleas remain on the dog or in your home, it's likely a flea allergy. Both of my girls have it, ugh! If they scratch a lot sometimes a secondary bacterial infection can happen, so it's probably good to see the vet. Hope your kiddo is all cleared up soon:love: |

A vet will definitely be necessary to end the itching cycle. Benadry just did not work very well with mine. Plus the bumps your baby has need help to clear up. It shouldn't be too awful expensive, since it's just one dog. We spent almost $500, but they also got their rabies shot and I prepaid for their other immunizations that day. Plus office visit fee, fecal and heartworm tests and the shot for itching. Whatever the cost, it is TOTALLY worth it to come home and see my girls actually relaxing without scratching themselves to death. The sooner the better, though, as this will likely only get worse and probably be more expensive to treat, then. Good luck, I hope your baby is all better quickly, it's so hard to watch them suffer! |
Yoshi is allergic to flea venom and has taken hydroxoyzine for it, Benedryl didn't help. Also red dye 40 that is in a lot of dog food and treats can cause the itching too. I have become an avid label reader. I am also careful with grains and he is also allergic to chicken. The past year has been great since we figured out all of the culprits of his itching. LOL It just takes time to see how they do with different things. |
Thank you! You all have cleared my mind! Joyce, the vet suggested Benadryl and Surolan (since we already had it from our dang toe-nail debacle), but I am glad to know that if Benadryl doesn't seem to be working there are alternatives. It seems everything has escalated from this near 100s temps we've been having in Louisiana. We are to apply Surolan 2-3Xs a day on the spots (because she said they may just be spreading because of the itching making them develop a mild staph infection) and children's Benadryl 1-2Xs a day. We do this for 2 weeks and if they don't clear up, it's something worth coming in for a visit. Let's hope and pray this 1st option will clear it all up. You'd totally swear my dog isn't bathed, brushed, groomed, etc. with all of our health issues lately! |

I'm glad you worked this out already! My mini schnauzer I not only prone to dog pimples, but is severely allergic to fleas and I mistook regular pimples for the allergy's initial reaction the first time. Cheap easy fix if you take care of it right away. I really like the "goo" and natural oils, coconut and neem and ACV as a rub, but lately we have been going straight to the vet for reactions-thank you neighbors who don't treat their dog. |
