My yorkie has parvovirus

Hi, Im new here and Im loving this whole site! My 5 mo old yorkie Peanut is at the vets as we speak for 5-10 days for parvo....my question is how do I clean my home for when he comes home....esp my carpets or do I need to? Thank you so much for any advice!!!!!

Best wishes for your pup's recovery. Generally it's recommended to spray or clean any pet areas w/ bleach to kill the virus. Not sure how to clean the carpets. A friend of mine was also advised to spray his yard too. HTH.

Parvo

I am so sorry to hear about your Yorkie..please talk with your vet and do a search on the net for help with your home.
As a rule, once they have Parvo they are immune..so your Yorkie may not have a problem..but please consult the vet. If you have other dogs you must make sure their vaccines are up to date...and do not bring any new pets for at least 3 months, maybe longer..it used to be advised to wait 6 months.

You need to clean any hard surface flooring with chlrox...bleach anything the dog played with, toys, wash bedding..shampoo the carpets with stream cleaner.
I would think the yard is okay since it is cold in WVA now..but plwase ask the vet.
Best wishes to you.

if your vet is nice ask them if they have roccal -d they used that in kennels to kill disease at the vets office if not i think bleach should do it. it is important that everything is washed before you come in contact with the puppy . EVERYTHING including your cloths you can probrably just steam clean your carpet or maybe ask your vet if this works get a can of lysol and spray all your furniture. where ever the puppy pooped is where you want to disinfect the most. pick up all poop from the yard. parvo is very very contagous. so if you dont know how your pup got it then maybe ask whoever comes in contact with the pup if they have been around any sick animals. good luck with your pup.

My pup had it when we adopted her, she is a mastiff mix. Bleach water works well and believe it or not Peroxide water will actually kill more of the germs. I used both; The Bleach water first then the Peroxide water. Definitly wash all bedding, any stuffed animals that are washable, your shoes, food bowls, and yes you need to pick up all of the dog feces in the yard, we sprayed the spots of pick-up with bleach water too. Parvo can lay dormant in the yard for months, so please dont forget to pick it up. You need to let friends know too so if they have little ones or ones that have not had shots they will not take it home to them. Even though he is being treated he will need to stay away from other animals, no petstore, groomers, or dog parks for 3-6 months. Yes that is a long time but you dont want others to get it. Definitly dont bring a new pup that hasn't had all of thier shots around. Our pup did great with the treatment, but we were told that there could be long term side effects, that may pop up later in her life. Get on google, it will tell you lots. Good Luck and please let us know how peanut does.

Keep us updated on how your yorkie is good, and Pat is totally right, until he is 100% recovered its best to not be exposed to the virus

I don't know much about the disease but I hope your baby has a speedy recovery!

I think you have been given good advise but I have some questions for you?

Is this puppy new to you? If so,where did you get it? Breeder, Pound, Humane Society?

If not new where has he been lately that he could possibly have picked up this disease, i.e. park, vets, someone else's home, walking in the neighborhood?

A wonderful person who used to be on YT had this happen to her. I thought a dog couldn't get Parvo once it had its shots, but her vet told her they still can, but it shouldn't be as severe (I guess like the Flu Shot with us). She had to clean her entire house and everything in it. PLEASE remember that when you are using bleach NOT to mix other chemicals with it!!!!!!!!!! Don't think that 2 good cleaners mixed together will make it twice as good....it could prove absolutely deadly. I hope your baby is all well soon. Please keep us updated.

I just wanted to say that the girl I mentioned in my above post was soooooo careful with her pets. She lives in an area where them going outside could result in being swooped up by a huge bird any many other dangers. She asked her vet how this could possibly happen because her dog didn't even go outside. He told her that her or her husband could have carried it in on their shoes. So remember to clean all the shoes also. It will be a lot of work for you....maybe someone will be nice enough to help.

I am so sorry to hear about your baby..Do you have any idea where and when it was exposed to the parvo-virus? I tell peole to never take a puppy or dog to places such as PetSmart for lessons or just shopping til after they have had ALL of their shots. There are vet hospitals attached to the PetSmarts here and that automatically means SICK animals are there. Take extra blankets and put one in the cart when you go in. DO NOT LET ANYONE PET YOUR BABY! When you get back to your car, use handiwipes to wash your hands and throw the used blanket in the trunk and wrap your baby in a clean one. Wash all linens in OdoBan.
This sounds like overkill but there are so many diseases that we are learning about and my motto is "Better safe tha sorry!"
The products I have used for years kills 99+% of all germs. It was originally developed for disenfecting hospitals. It can be used on almost any surface, if not caustic, will not ruin surfaces PLUS it has a pleasant fragrance. Do a Google on OdoBan and the other products the company makes. I use OdoBan because it is not toxic to me babies..of course, you would not spray any solution directly on an animal. I used to have cases shipped to me from the manufacturer but it is not available at Sam's club. Read all instructions AND use it exactly as recommended. I actually, use more of the product in the solution that I use in a spray bottle. I clean floors with it 2 times a day.
BTW, the action of disinfecting is done by enzymatic action. The drain cleaner they make is also the best product I have ever used.
Let us know what the vet uses to treat your sweetheart. Thank goodness you caught it so soon.

I'm so sorry your baby has parvo. I lost a pom puppy to the virus about 5 months ago. What I honestly had to do before I got another puppy was bleach EVERYTHING! several times. I used a bleach water solution and ran over the countertops, floors and other surfaces about 3 times a day for 3 weeks, with it, to kill it. If you do this make sure you test out a small spot on the counter to make sure it won't discolor it. I also had to bleach my carpets(thank goodness they were already white  ), and any other places where the pom puppy had vomited or used the bathroom. Parvo virus can survive in cold and hot tempertures for 3-9 months. I also had to bleach the grass where he used the bathroom. Parvo virus cannot be killed by anything BUT bleach, solutions claiming to kill it won't.The good news is that, since your puppy has already had the virus, he's most likely immune to getting it again, but other unvaccinated puppies aren't. hope this helps, and I hope your little one is okay!!!!tucker and I send hugs! :aimeeyork
