Reverse sneeze? Collapsed trachea? Something else? Hi all, I just recently got my girl puppy, a 4 month old Yorkie named Pancake. She makes me so happy, but I have a concern about her health that a trip to the vet really hasn't cleared up to my satisfaction. Below is the link to a video I took of her. She goes through episodes like this multiple times a day, maybe up to 10 or more. Oftentimes, it is followed by a quick sneeze/cough (I can't really tell which it is). I was convinced it was kennel cough, but I took her to the vet and they checked out her lungs and concluded that they didn't think it was a respiratory infection. They gave me an antibiotic anyway, which she has been on for three days now. The vet said it may be allergies, and that she may be allergic to the two rabbits I also have living in my apartment. The episodes do seem to occur most frequently indoors compared to outdoors, but she has only really been indoors in my apartment, so it is hard to tell if it really is the rabbits. Other than the episodes, she seems to be in great health. She has a ravenous appetite and plenty of energy, although she does her fair share of napping. I don't think that's out of the ordinary for a puppy, though. Her bowels are just fine. Any advice/info would be greatly appreciated. I have raised plenty of puppies in the past and have had dogs all my life, but this is my first Yorkie experience. I am so worried about her and don't know what else to do. Thanks. not 100 % positive but that sounds like a cough to me |
It sounds like a cough to me To. is it possible for dogs to get that postnasal drip from allergies? For people not every cough is lungs. I don't know if it is the same for dogs. When Maggie reverse sneezes she does it over and over again like she can't stop until we distract her. |
Reverse Sneeze It sounds like kennel cough. She should be put on antibiotics. It could take 3weeks to 2 months to clear up. This is caught from other dogs usually in parks or with other pups. You can give her plain yogurt 1 tsp. daily this will put the ph back in her system. Don't let her come in contact with other dogs until the cough is gone. My dog just got over this and got it from the park. I have had yorkies since 1985. |
Thanks so much for the responses. I took her to the vet two days ago so I don't know they didn't think it was kennel cough. She didn't cough at all when she was at the vet so maybe if I show them the video, they will be more convinced. Either way, they did give me an antibiotic that I have been giving her twice a day. They told me to give it to her for 10 days. When you say it may take that long to clear up, do you mean she should be taking an antibiotic for that long? |

yes, finish the complete course of antibiotics the vet gave you even if she seem to feel better before that..... |
Sounds like a cough to me. My first thought would be kennel cough, but there are a lot of reasons for coughing. It would be good for the vet to see the video. Sounds like they are treating it as an infection just in case. Antibiotics will really only help secondary infections though. If it is an infection, it could last a long time. Most vets probably won't give antibiotics for weeks unless there is a secondary infection. When my dogshad kennel cough, they were put on an AB only after they developed the nasally symptoms. They were on it for about ten days. |
I am planning on giving it to her for the 10 days as I was instructed by the vet, but Ehrenworth mentioned that it could take anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months to clear up. Should she get antibiotic for this entire period until she does clear up? Or will 10 days of the antibiotic kill whatever is causing the symptoms and the symptoms themselves will take a little longer to clear up? |
Thanks so much Ellie May! It makes me feel better that others are recognizing it as kennel cough as well. I will continue with her on the antibiotic, and we are going back to the vet on June 5 for her next round of vaccinations so I will show them the video then. |
When my Gina had kennel cough she sounded like a goose honking and it lasted for a while - like 30 to 45 seconds of coughing. Your video didn't sound like that to me. It is so hard dx'ing these things. Have you shown the video to the vet? |

well after the 10 days , just schedule a recheck with your vet. if she needs more meds i am sure they will give it to her. |
My dog just passed from collapsed trachea and had it for 7 years. A collapsed trachea shows up on an x-ray. |
