What to do after Pancreatitis...need advice My 8 yr old yorkie just got home after 3 days in the hospital with Pancreatitis. Her primary symptom has been horrible diarrhea, so bad her little bottom from underneath her tail all the way tu under her anus it is bright red. You can tell it is so painful. They did give me some dermalome cream which I have been using. Unfortunately, when I picked her up there was only one vet on duty and she was busy with an emergency so she couldn't talk with me. All the tech told me was small meals several times a day . She didn't even say what type of food but I knew from reading to keep it low fat. I suggested boiled chicken and rice and she said that should be ok. She said a couple tablespoons full at a time. So I fed her 3 times yesterday between 3 pm and 1 am. She had no vomiting and was very hungry for the food. So todays a full day but I'm not sure how much total food to give her . Shes a big girl (9 lbs) which I know is part of the issue. Can someone tell me how much and how often? She is a very picky eater so even though they didn't suggest or offer a prescription low fat dog food, I know she wouldn't eat it which is why I went for the chicken. Also imam scared to death the diarrhea will come back. She had one stool, this morning and it wasn't watery but it was loose still. Not only would continued diarrhea mean her Pancreatitis isn't better but her poor little bum can't take more. So how long till she has solid stool? Is it normall that it's still soft? Thanks for any advice. I cannot afford to go back to the vet. This last stay cost me $800 and I don't have a cent more . In fact I'm not sure how I will make it to the next pay day so I need to do everything I can to treat her at home |
I'm really sorry about your little one. Zoey had a bout with pancreatitis a few months ago - one day was $900.00 where I live - so I understand the money situation. I'm sorry that the vet didn't at least call you after the emergency was taken care of and tell you what to do. Anyway, feed her four or five times per day as you are doing. Be sure the food is low fat. I was given Prescription diet for Zoey and she loved it but then she will eat anything. I know how stressful this is for both of you. No treats. Just keep her little tummy with some food in it all day. Good luck. |
I would feed her 50% rice and 50% chicken breast for the next couple of days. If she is tolerating a couple of tablespoons at a time (that is 1/8 of a cup of food), I'd increase to 1/4 of a cup of food 3-4 times a day for today. By tomorrow, I'd go to 1/2 cup a food two to three times a day. Personally, I'd keep her on chicken and rice for the next couple of weeks unless you are going to an Rx diet for pancreatitis. You need to balance this diet after a few days. If you need some help in this pinch, PM me as my dog weighs about the same and I can tell you what you need to balance this temporarily until she is back on commercial food. Your vet should be telling you what to do and what food to give her going forward. |
solid gold has a low fat food which is 6% and my friend whose dog has pancreatitis has done very well for years on it, it is called holistique blend |
Solid Gold is manufactured by Diamond - the one that has all the recalls going on right now. |
I think they are going to someone else other than diamond in the future, this is there first recall ever for dry dog food |
Any time I have had a pup hospitalized with pancreatitis, they have been put on Hill's I/D and they have done really well! I would call your vet and ask about that. |
