Spayed So Bella finally got spayed today. I knew she would be a little down after the surgery which is what I feared most but she's acting a little more uncomfortable than I thought. It's horrible to see her so hurt and like she moans a little if I touch her or hold her. I picked her up at 6pm and gave her water and she drank a lot and threw it up right away and then as the vet said I only tried feeding her a small amount of rice and boiled chicken but she didn't even smell it. I'm hoping tomorrow she will wake up better but is there any advice? Anyone that has gone through this and their baby reacted the same way? Anything I can do to comfort her more than I have been trying to do? My vet was kinna no help, sort of tough when I was asking a whole bunch of questions he's like she'll be fine, all dogs heal different just like humans but it's so tough to see her like this :/ thanks guys |
Yes. My girl was very out of it also. She didn't throw up water...but she didn't drink any at first. She became a bit interested in food at midnight. No worries on not wanting to eat if surgery was today. Anesthesia can be nauseating. It is good if she wants to drink, but I woudn't let her drink tons at once. Just a warm place to lay and all pain meds the vet gave you.. |
Yes, they sometimes do act out of it. The moaning often is from the anesthesia more than discomfort. If she is on pain meds, I am sure it is due to the anesthesia. She will more than likely be much brighter tomorrow. |
Thanks a lot, that's actually very relieving. The worst part is the vet didn't give her any meds! He said he put a pain relief injection that last 24 hours! Nd I kept asking and after that? He's like she won't need any. I didn't wanna sound rude or as if I was doubting him but it's just so hard to understand how they go through this surgery that doesn't seem simple at all and after 24 hours not need pain relievers! And since he compared her to a human I thought, well if a human went through this they sure would need pain relievers more than 24 hours. Ugh! I wish I would've asked him all before surgery with him but I thought it was common sense :( |
Just call him tomorrow and ask for pain medication. He will give it to you if you insist! I always keep my pups on pain med for about 3 days...they hide pain so it is in my opinion not right to assume there is no pain. I just feel better giving it just in case they are in pain. |
I'm just curious, how old is Bella and how big is she. I am going to be faced with this decision and while I know I will do it I am scared to death about it. Hope Bella gets better soon |
Maggie didn't come home with any meds. She was out of it the first day. She did get a pee out and we figure they probably gave her IV fluids that gave her something to pee. She was a little groggy and slow the next morning but perked up pretty quick. I know some people say they hide pain, I think it's more that they don't carry on about it like we do. Anyhow, she acted so fine that I don't believe she had PAIN, maybe some discomfort, but Maggie did fine. She seemed to have PAIN after her 1 year old shots, it was pretty obvious to me, and baby aspirin helped. I think you will recognize if she needs something for pain tomorrow. |
All invasive abdomial surgeries and even neuters are a reason to give pain meds. I'd call and insist. If the vet is being cold about it, there are so many other ones out there! Pain meds can reduce inflammation and shorten healing time. |
I would be very upset if my vet did not prescribe something for pain. Of course they will have pain - how could they not??? This is major surgery for these baby's. Are we just supposed to believe that they do not feel? My goodness, they have been cut open and had organs removed - they will be in pain. They just can't voice it like humans, and in the wild they would be killed if they showed weakness. I have been told that is the reason they hide their pain. We have to be the voice for these little ones...if she acts uncomfortable, I would call your vet and insist they give you something to make her more comfortable. You are right to be such a good mama and be concerned...she is lucky to have you taking care of her! |

Thanks to all of you! Bella's 3 and weighs 7 pounds. I knew I wasn't crazy for feeling the way I felt! She actually did wake up a bit better, I hand fed her and she ate a little bit which made me feel a lot better and she peed ALOT! Probably from all the water she drank last night. She still doesn't even want to get out of bed or move much so I'm just staying in bed with her all Day too. I'm definitely not going to work the rest of the week. And like most of you Said, I'm calling her vet today and insisting on meds. |
