puppy with hypoglycemia--HELP My little guy is a rescue puppy and is about 10 weeks old. He has been home for 2 full days now. Last night he had a seizure, with vomiting, and urinating. He had been eating and using the "restroom" normally and frequently all day. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. I read online to put karo syrup on his gums, did that. No change. Immediately rushed him to the emergency vet. His sugar tested at 54 and that was after having the syrup. I was given nutrical and prescription diet food. He seemed so much better when we left but by 9:30 he was vomiting...back to the vet. She said it was the stress of moving that likely caused the episode. I am now feeding him through a dropper as well as giving him pedialyte with a dropper. He has NO energy what so ever but gums look good and has no signs of dehydration. When will my little guy get back to normal or what else should I be doing? Worried momma |
I am no expert but if he is throwing up something is causing it I think I would personally seek a 2nd opinion. Did they check to make sure his font was closed normally? |
is he still throwing up? A vomiting puppy is a time bomb. These little guys go downhill fast. Make sure he's getting something every 2 hours and let him rest. It may take him a few days to bounce back. Did he had a temp? |
throwing up He was only throwing up shortly after we got back home and we went back to the vet. No vomit since then. She told me to give him 2mls of wet food at least every two hours. |
Did you vet say what had caused the seizure? |
cause Extremely low blood sugar. His blood sugar was 54 when we arrived and that was after syrup. |
You will have to give him more than 2 cc of wet food...did you misunderstand that??? How big is this baby??? He will need at least 10 cc of food every 2-3 hours...if he wont eat it out of a saucer, or off the end of your finger, you will have to use the syringe and squirt a little in his mouth, let his swallow, and repeat until he has gotten 10cc. You can mix 1 tbsp of Karo in that can of dog food, and then give him a 10cc syringe full every 2 hours...if that vet did not give you a syringe, get one tomorrow...you need a syringe with an "irrigation tip" or a "feeding tip"....it is tapered and you can easily squirt the food in the babys mouth with that.....the Karo in the dog food will make it easier to keep his sugar up as he will be getting sugar as well as food every 2-3 hours....after the 10cc of food, give him his drink of pedialyte....there again, he needs about 10cc/2hours to keep him hydrated......poor baby...it is going to be an around the clock deal for you for quite awhile....but you will get into a routine, and it will run smoother.....but this is absolutely vital you do this, or you will loose this baby. You need somebody to get you a 10cc feeding tip or irrigation tip syringe....if all you can get your hands on is a 3cc, you will have to give 3-4 syringefuls of that size to that baby every 2-3 hours..... |

This puppy needs to be fed around the clock!! Continued hypoglycemia will result in seizures and eventually brain damage and possible death. I strongly advise you to set your alarm! Good luck!! |
I really feel for you and your baby. We went through this when first getting Luna. Almost lost her once, the ER vet saved her life. We knew NOTHING about hypoglycemia and thank goodness we didn't wait any longer, as the vet said that she would have died for sure. Yes, the ladies here are so right, you will need to feel this baby around the clock. In our case, it was about a week or so, and then after that I'd still have to coax her to eat her food and make darned sure she didn't over exert herself playing. I'll be thinking of you and your baby and praying that he turns the corner soon and that he'll start eating on his own soon! |
progress We did make a little progress through the night. He ate on his own this morning. I still had to feed him more but he walked to his bowl and bless his heart, he tried. I'm prepared for round the clock. Even though my roommate just said I look like a character from Beetlejuice. Worth it. What would I do without my friends? I thank everyone for your help as well. |
Hypoglocemia Puppy How did he come to be a rescue puppy? Were there any issues before you got him? Also, I didnt see his age listed. |
Rescue Pup Sorry, I just saw where you said he was ten weeks old. I have also mixed Esbilac and Chicken Baby Food and given that through a syringe. While you are feeding and playing with him, keep trying to get him to take it from your finger. At 10 weeks unless he has other problems, he should begin to try and eat on his own. Good Luck. I also gave Nutrical Puppy regularly as well as Karo Syrup. |
rescued A lady who rescues dogs in her area was told about these puppies by the owners neighbor. They were covered in feces and scared to death. His parents were a mess to but the owners wouldn't let her take them. They did allow her to psy for them to be fixed. I have chicken baby food (no onion powder) which he does seem to like. He'll take the nutrical off my finger but nothing else. |
