Baby girl with Coccidia...not eating/playing/whining/nothing

I have a 9 weeks old yorkie that I have only had since last Thursday. The first couple days she seemed ok, playful and all, but she wouldn't eat. I got the food that the lady I got it from said she was eating too. Monday, I went a head and took her to the vet. They checked her stool and she was diagnosed with Coccidia and given meds for that. She doesn't seem to be improving. I took her back to the vet today and they just said her blood sugar was low to continue giving her the NutriCal every hour and feeding her with a syringe 5-6 times a day. She still won't eat unless I force her with a syring and all she does is sleep. She does get up to use the bathroom and to take a drink of water but thats it. She walks with her tail down and just looks so pitiful. Doesn't try to play and rarely makes a noise. Has anyone else gone through this or have any other suggestions?

I think this sounds really bad! Maybe you should go to the emergency vet right away?? Could it be something else since the medicine is not helping. I hope someone can help you. I will keep bumping this until I go to bed. I am so sorry!!

Bump!!! :)

9 weeks is very young for a Yorkie to leave their mother. I think you should definitely get another opinion and run some tests on other possible issues.

I think you need to get back to the vet if you can. This doesn't sound good. Have you spoken to the breeder?

ndguad 05-16-2012 07:37 PM

They did a fecal test so any other parasites she could have had, they would have seen. Yes I talked to the breeder and she just said that dogs can get Coccidia just from a change of environment and that she hasn't had any other problems. Which isn't what the vet said but I didn't want to argue. I don't care to talk to the breeder, I just want to get Gypsy healthy. I am already attached.

My baby was about 12 weeks old when we got her and she had it too. I think it's pretty common in the babies. Part of her problem might just be the new environment and adjusting. My baby was a little mopy too at first, until she got to know us. Are you cuddling her and keeping her close so she doesn't miss her mommy as much. My baby used to cry in her cage, but slept on me just fine, they just get lonely and maybe sort of depressed. I made sure to still use her crate though.

Make sure she is eating/drinking/pooping and taking her meds. I remember giving nutrical too because I didn't think she was eating enough. Give her lots of loving and cuddling.

I helped my sis-in-law through a rough patch with her little girl who she got way to young also. Same type of thing. The only thing we did that the vet said he had not used but worked in just 2 days was we took the kibble she had been on and put it in a coffee grinder then we mixed it with hot water to make a soup like mixture that she finally ate on her own. After the first 2 days we made it thicker each day. It took about a week but she is doing great. Good luck with your little one.

Beech nut baby food chicken or beef.

It got Noah through parvo.

Stress does make these little ones break with coccidia....I dont know what your vet told you, but ALL dogs harbor that protozoa) in their bowel....and some will have diarrhea with the stress of new home, possibly new food (because it seems that is the FIRST thing all new owners do, is change the baby's food!)_That coupled with the fact this baby is too young to be taken away from her momma, is stressing the little darling out. You have GOT to stay on top of that hypoglycemia issue....that baby must eat, around the clock, until she gets thru this. These babies are also very susceptable to parvo at this stage....you have to be very careful she does not go out in public or around where any other dogs are/have been until she is completely vaccinated at 16 weeks.....what medicine did the vet give you for the diarrhea/ coccidia...how often do you give it....Albon with Flagyl (Metronidazole) is what is usually given, sometimes they will add Amoxicillin to the mixture....you give this for at least 10 days....this stuff works really quickly and they usually stop with the diarrhea within 24 hours....
Mix up a gruel for the baby...ground up the puppy kibble she came from the breeder on, mix a little Just Born Puppy milk, cut 1:1 with Pedialyte, 1 tsp.Karo syrup and about a tbsp. baby food...I always use chicken, it isnt as strong as beef....make it the consistancy of a thin cream soup, and if it doesnt lick it up out of a saucer, feed it to her from a syringe....(it has to be liquid enough to go thru the syringe)....feed her every 2-3 hours around the clock, at least 10-15cc....warm it a little so she digests it better....hang in there with her.....love on her and cuddle her...she doesnt feel good and her momma has disappeared on her, she is confused and lost.....poor little soul...

:thumbup: OP you really must feed her that frequently...she could die if she goes hypoglycemic for too long.

I know this will be a hard time for you, as I went through this. I had to syringe feed and water Ziggy (who was 8 weeks old) every 2 hours, even through the night. I did this for 2 weeks. Taking him to the vet everyday for a wellness check up.. Things got better. I intised him with mince/ home made beef patties and slowly he became more interested in eating by himself (even though i still had to put the food in my hand and hand feed him, it was an improvement) and he was now playing and had energy. then my vet said it was ok to taper of the Nutrical.

This was the toughest time in my life, but i got through it thanks to great vets and dedication on my part! I believe we are closer for this ordeal.

You can make it through, just make sure his blood sugar dont drop, force feed and when he has enough energy, he will start eating again. There is light at the end of this tunnel

Sending prayers for your baby

Thank you so much for all your words and support! I have been giving her nutriCal every hour and syringe feeding her every 3. I had to work today and my boyfriend stayed home with her, staying on top of the feedings. I am soooooooo pleased to say when I walked in the door, she was eating out of her bowl all on her own!! She is still not 100% but she is definately moving in the right direction! :) She was climbing in my lab and giving me kisses and even tried playfully nibbling on my fingers. I am one happy momma right now and I feel very confident that she is going to be ok. :) She has a check up on Monday so until then I will continue with the meds and nutriCal and pray for the best. :) Thanks again to you all!

Awww, sounds like she's on her way to feeling much better:) I'm so glad:D!!! Don't let her wear herself out too much until she's eating really well;)
