What is wrong with my baby? Hi, I am a proud new mommy of a 13 week old female yorkie. I am so worried about my baby girl! Up until a week ago she was your typical puppy, running, playing and in to everything! About a week ago she started acting strange, lethargic, depressed and not interested in ANYTHING. I took her to the vet and he suspected hypoglycemic, but her glucose came back within normal range. He did a CBC and some test for organ functions and they all came back normal. The only thing was her WBC was slightly elevated and her iron was a little low, but the vet did not think that was enough to have her act the way she was. He put her on an antibioitic, nutra-cal, vitavi, and an anti-infammatory. She is still not better! Took her back and eyes are draining and swollen and she is limping like an old dog. She doesn't even look like the same dog. Hair is scraggly and she looks horrible. He took her off the antibiotic because he was afraid she might be allergic to it & she is now on eye drops. This is just heart breaking because I don't know what to do? She is eating, drinkin, peeing and pooping normal. Please help with any suggestions! I am afraid of loosing her and love her so much. Thank you! |
Is there a vet school near you? I'd take her there... and maybe to an animal ER tonight for a second opinion. She's too young, you need answers... |
I agree, I would get her to an ER ASAP, before you loose her. Is she eating & drinking at all ? |
Yes, she is eating, drinking, poop and peeing normal. Glucose and blood work all within normal ranges. Could this be an early sign of a liver shunt, but her liver enzymes were normal when tested. |
Is she showing any neurological symptoms like dizziness, lameness or head bobbing ? was she vaccinated just prior to the onset of her symptoms ? any vomiting are her stools normal looking or soft or runny ? Are you feeding her any treats & if yes then what kind ? |
Did the vet check for worms ? Also did they mention Distemper ? as her symptoms could be Distemper. |
Her poop is normal and no vomiting. She use to run, play and chase us around the house but now she just sleeps in her bed. I hold her and she cuddles me and when the kids come around her tail wags and she is happy but that is about it. I swear someone switched my dog on me! She did receive a vaccination a week before, but I can't remember which one. I let the vet know too I wanted her vaccinations spread out, not all at one time and I did not want her vaccinated with anything she did not absolutely need. She is pad trained and doesn't go outside very often. She goes to my mom's house during the day while I work and is around her dogs, but they are all healthy and current on their vaccinations. She loves going over there and gets along with all of them. Vet did put her on Lactulose but I don't see a difference. I do give her treats (Pet Botanics mini Training treats) She gets maybe 5 a day. I have been giving them to her since she was 8 weeks old when she "got busy" on her pad. I feed her puppy Nutra & the vet suggested Science Diet recovery right now to mix in with it. She eats 4 times a day 1/8 - 1/4 cup with tablespoon of the recovery. |
Yes, fecal was negative for everything. He did mention distemper, but said she didn't have the fever that went with it, so he didn't feel it was that. |

I posted the skinny on her a few minutes ago, but I received a message it had to be reviewed before posted so you are going to get it twice. She is inside pretty much exclusively & pad potty trained. She does go to my mom's during the day while I am at work and she does have dogs, but they are up to date on vaccinations. Zoe has had the vaccinations she can for her age and did not have any reactions at the time 1 week prior to her change. |
No, she does not have a temp, no vomit and stools are normal. |
No temp but still lethargic ? I would go to the ER & find a vet school in the A.M. as there is obviously something wrong & she's very young to be left with no diagnosis & could die before you get one if you wait much longer. Yorkie puppies are very fragile & tiny, things can & most often do spiral out of control before you realize what's going on. |

This baby needs aggressive medical treatment immediately or you will loose her! Find a vet school and go immediately! Her condition is deteriorating.... |
Shots I have had very similar reactions with my last two litters after shots. I have had at least one puppy go through this and take a week or more to get back to themselves. I have asked the vet if something in the vaccines have changed and he assures me they havent. I am kind of afraid of even trying when I have another litter. |
i hope she is doing better...wish we had some answers for you. sounds like she might be reacting to the shots. i have been reading up on this and it is kinda scary. cedric is so sensative that i have always spread out his shots. i would rather bring him back multiple times then have him get sick from it. i will keep your baby in my thoughts. i hope she will be ok. |
