Questions I should ask? So Layla goes to see the specialist on Friday about possible LP surgery. Can anyone who has been through it before help me with questions I should be asking? Thanks. |
I would familiarize myself with the different types of repairs and make sure that you understand what one he is using and why. Here are some links to read: 01 Medial Luxating Patella - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! ACVS - Patellar Luxations Luxating patella |

Hi Marci, So sorry Layla will be going thru surgery. I found that it was very helpful to have someone with me when we picked Hot Rod up. I lost all attention when they brought him into the room and he lept into my arms. lol Seriously, I would write down these questions so all will be answered to your understanding. What type of pain meds; how long will she need to take them; what to do if she seems to be having trouble taking them-upset tummy or not eating; what type (extent) of physical activity can she have---or not have; when can she start any type of physical therapy, if any; can she do some water therapy down the road; These are some of what I can think of for now. We had to stop Hot Rod's pain meds as he was not eating due to them upsetting his tummy. The surgeon felt he had residule from the surgery and the few days that he was on it that it was okay to do so. Good luck and please let us know how Layla is doing. Hugs. Bo |
I would ask about post surgery activity. I had always read to keep them still, don't let them walk, etc. Buster's surgeon said that he could walk although not run, that it was better for him to put weight on the leg. Walking around the house for a few minutes at a time really seemed to help his recovery. Be careful if you don't have carpet, it's easy for them to slip on tile or laminate. Meds is another thing to ask about. I was so focused on his incision and trying to keep him comfortable, I didn't know the side effects of one of his meds. Buster was sent home with Medicam and I had no idea it would make him thirsty. He wanted to drink water all of the time and then of course he had to pee all of the time. He couldn't go out by himself to potty and it was driving both of us crazy. |
When I took Pixie to the specialist I already had 3 other vets opinions that she needed the surgery. The surgeon went over everything in detail showing exactly what she would be doing and why. Pixie had bone cut and a pin put in do properly align her knee/leg. My last question was what if it where your dog? Also, this surgeon had done Cali's emergency spay, liver and intestinal biopsies and consulted with on my pom Maya. So I trusted her. They gave me detailed written instructions for after care and had me bring her back after a few days to check on how she was doing. If you don't have one already, I suggest you get one of Mom to Hot Rods kisse collars. As soon as I picked Pixie up I switched her to the soft collar from the plastic cone and she was so much less stressed. Also, when I made the appointment they told me not to feed Pixie in case they did the surgery that day and they did. I hope Layla's visit goes well and she can avoid surgery. |
I have no experience or advice, just wanted to wish you and Layla well. I hope that whatever is decided, that it goes well:love: |
I also have no advice, but just wanted to let you know we will be thinking about Layla. Is she going to be having the surgery soon? |
The vet visit went well today. We are going to "wait and see' which is exactly what I want to do. I am going to bring Layla back up to 100% activity (her usual hour walks and playing ball in the backyard) and see if this triggers her knee. If it does- off to surgery we go. If not, it was a one time thing and we are good! I fully expect it to bother her knee but I like that we are not rushing into surgery. She is now a phase 3 (was a phase 1 back in '08). She is also a bit bow legged (did not know!) which is not helping matters. THe best part is, if she has to have surgery- this centre shares its space with an ER vet so she would be transferred there at night and would be watched throughout the night. Thanks all for your help! |
Best wishes to you and Layla. |
