Has anyone been through this? Today, I just got results back from yuna's urine test and she has a UTI which I suspected, but the vet also told me she had HIGH amounts of crystals in her urine. The results said 50 something... I think PPB. The condition is called calcium oxalate. If left untreated, they would turn into stones and require surgery. The vet attributed it to her diet. I have fed her Fromm four-star line ever since she was little (approximately 11 weeks old) and she is now 2 years old and 3 months. I did try countless brands before I settled on Fromm because she seem to love eating it. Now, I can't feed her that anymore. I got medicine for her UTI, but for the crystals, I got the Royal Canin prescription 'urinary so' food from the vet. She's not eating it. I tried mixing water with it and she doesn't eat it. She also pooped mucus (no blood) with few strands of poop, but there was mucus left on her butt which she was rubbing all over the house. I cleaned it all up. An hour later, I find a pile of blood/ mucus and I checked her butt and there were red stains. I quickly brought sample to the vet and I am awaiting the results. The only thing I added was the Kong treats for the classic toys. Everything else was her usual food. Asides from that, the crystals are an issue so I can't even feed her Fromm or any of the favor treats anymore. I have put away all of her treats and Fromm food and trying to feed her the Royal Canin urinary so.... She's not eating, she ate a few pieces of treats earlier before I found the blood mucus, but ate nothing afterwards. I even tried giving her a treat and she won't eat it now. I don't know what to do. Has anyone been through this? |
Wow, it sounds alot like my story from last month. Both my boys had crystals in their urine, but they are the struvite crystals. The vet thinks it's from their food (I rotated Acana and TOTW), and put them on Royal Canin Urinary SO. I need to get their urine retested soon, but they showed no symptoms, it was found during a routine health screen. Here is my story http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...important.html |
I am so sorry Yuna is sick. Which Fromm flavor was she eating? Was it one of the grain free Four Star Nutritionals? Definitely hold all treats and give nothing but the prescription diet. Sending prayers and positive thoughts for your little girl. |

In addition to Kong treats, what else does she eat -- treats, chews? I don't know that much about crystals, so I will be watching for others' input here. Plus, my guys eat the Chicken a la Veg. |
I think there might be at least one alternative to the RC urinary food. Maybe try contacting Ladyjane for suggestion if Luna won't eat the RC. |

I sometimes feed her plain cooked chicken and also pieces of mozarella cheese strings and white rice. |

I'm sure more people who have experience with crystals/stones will weigh in (along with Schooby above) whether a little steamed chicken, rice, and fruit treats would be okay when Luna is back on track. I try to stick only to kibble because one little thing can cause problems. My guys are prone to painful gas if I give them a tiny bit of carrot (Max had muscousy diarrhea when I gave him carrot as a pup) or apple -- both of which are popular treats. Sending Yuna hugs. |

The vets pick the prescription diets for urinary conditions based upon what the symptoms are....and type of stones. I have two pups who are on Urinary SO and they both are doing very well on it. One had two episodes of stones in the past....he has been fine now for almost three years on this food! I give him the canned food and add water to it. Sometimes it takes a bit of patience to get them to change their eating habits. Just put it down and if they don't eat, don't give in and substitute the food with another food. Then, a bit later, present the food again. The RX diets save lives! The only other alternative I could suggest is home cooking, but only under the guidance of a board certified vet nutritionist. |

I would definitely try the canned food....she might adjust better to it! :) |

Sid had bladder stone surgery a couple of years ago. We've had him on uninary s/o ever since. We check his urine every 2 or 3 months. So far no more stones forming, although there are still crystals in his urine. If your dog doen't like the dry food try the canned. |
