Tanks Cough Hey everyone! Unfortunately Tanks cough has come back, I've attached a link so you all can hear his cough, let me know what you think! He was originally diagnosed with Kennel Cough, and he was on meds for a few months, and then in doggy hospital on nebulizer for 4 days, when he came home he was not coughing, but had diarrhea from all the meds, thankfully diarrhea cleared up but now the cough is back  I have seen 3 different vets who all said it was kennel cough, but now my main vet would like to send me to a speacialist which I agree, and she's thinking it's due to his trachea. I know these little guys are prone to trachea collapse and other problems but I'm wondering why if it's his trachea, why did his cough disappear after nebulizer and he was cough free for a couple weeks before it came back...Anyway the only specialist is over an hour away from me and is booked for 2wks, so I'm hoping you all can give me some opinions on his cough, kennel cough vs. trachea etc...Thanks in advance!! I also forgot to add, the cough acts up after he is resting (when he wakes up from naps etc) or when he's running around or very excited. |
I don't have much advice on this but I can tell you Georgie has done that before if it helps. He does it especially after playing and I tell him to calm down and then he's fine. It almost sounds like a reverse sneeze which many people here can tell you they have heard from their babies. I know you want to be extra careful since Tank has been through so much with his cough. |

I would definitely go to the specialist, so you can get some answers. Good luck to you and Tank. |
I agree, sounds like a reverse sneeze to me also. Different things can initiate reverse sneezing. As it did help for a while after AB treatment, I'm wondering if a Culture and Sensitivity was done... maybe a different antibiotic would do the trick.... My first Yorkie RS'd so bad at night I thought she would pass from her heart giving out. I called my vet at 3AM, and he said to give her 1/2 tablet of Sudafed (nasal decongestant). It worked like a charm. Maybe ask your vet about that. |
Hi everyone I'm so sorry I've taken so long to respond!! I guess it's a little comforting that you all think it's a reverse sneeze, he just does it so badly in the early AM I get so worried about him! I'm still waiting on an apt at the specialist so I will keep you all posted as soon as I have an update for him! Thank you all for your responses! |
Reverse sneezing seems to be very common. I think it's great you are taking to have it checked just to be safe. Keep us posted:) |
So, I have had Tank on prescription food (I/D, chicken and rice) and he has been fine, and also on a very low dose cortizone from vet. And coughing has been diminishing, but my sister gave him a couple small pieces of banana this AM, and his coughing & wheezing got bad again and his nose is runny now...is it possible this is all a food allergy of some sort?? |
