Help, please! Yorkie with kidney stones and disoriented Two weekends ago (04/15/2012), we took our 4 year old Yorkie to vet when we noticed he was having trouble urinating and seemed to be in a considerable amount of pain. After a series of urine tests, blood tests, x-rays, and sonograms, we discovered that Winston has a couple of tiny kidney stones. They prescribed a muscle relaxer, pain killer, and an antibiotic to help with inflammation. We brought Winston home, he began urinating with ease, but was having trouble walking and became increasingly disoriented. We were really concerned and contacted the vet several times when it became apparent that Winston was having sight issues and unresponsive to our commands. Even when he was hurting, he didn't have the orientation issues till he began taking medicine. We were advised to stop the muscle relaxer and pain medicine on Saturday (04/21/2012). Sunday morning (04/22/2012), Winston was more responsive and by that evening showed increase signs of energy, more responsive, and more like himself, but still a little trouble walking/running, but was navigating much better. This morning he seems to have regressed, was completely unresponsive to commands, crying, and falling over every time he stood. We went back to the vet, and after spending all day there and running blood and urine tests again, they said they are not sure what is going on, but believe he is just having a sever reaction to the medicine. He was given a new antibiotic, and sent home for monitoring. All of his blood work, urine tests, and x-rays haven't shown anything else to be wrong, i.e no bacterial infections or swelling around the spine or brain. He has only been home a few hours, and the new medicine has only been in his system since around 6pm, but he is not improving. Has anyone encountered this before? Any ideas or suggestions? We are completely lost and would appreciate any help. |
Did they check his liver bile acids & did they look for a liver shunt in any of the pics that were taken ? What kind of stones were they ? Was your pup recently vaccinated ? Also was MRI and spinal tapp done ? as this is really the only way to detect bacteria in the spine. |
Thanks for the reply! I'll have to ask my girlfriend about today's results, but the three previous didn't indicate issues with his liver. He had his yearly vaccines the first week of February. |
All we know is that the stones are kidney stones. The vet is waiting for a few results to return and to see how he responds to the new medicine before proceeding with a spinal tap or MRI. |
I would get him to a vet school clinic asap. |

I agree, a vet school would be the best place to go & take all test results & pics to date with you. There are too many things that could be life threatening with his symptoms that need to be addresses much faster then your regular vet can do. I will be Praying for a good outcome & Please keep us posted here as even though they do not belong to us , we still worry with you. |
Saying prayers for a good update. |
Thanks for everyone's thoughts, prayers, and recommendations. Winston's, our Yorkie, condition has improved over the last 24 hours. While he is still having some stability issues, his energy level, eye contact, response to verbal commands has improved. We are still waiting for the results of a test that was conducted on Monday night to determine if the issue is neurological or was a severe reaction/overdose. We do know that his liver, kidneys, and other organs are functioning and are healthy. There is no indication of swelling or excess fluid on his brain or spine. His blood work and urine samples came back normal. Other than the stones and stability/responsiveness issues, he is a very healthy dog. The doctors are leaning towards it being a severe reaction/overdose since his stability and responsiveness issues began after taking an antibiotic that commonly has a negative side effect on Yorkies. It doesn't help that he was taking the antibiotic for about a week in combination with various other sedatives, pain killers, muscle relaxers, and other various medications. We took everyone's advise and contacted the closest Vet School, located at UGA, to see if they could help. The doctor we spoke with agreed with the vet we are currently seeing and indicated that we do not need to visit their facilities. At this point, Winston will just need time for the reaction to subside and the new antibiotic to run its course, or he will need an MRI and spinal tap to see what steroid regimen will be best. We were told that we should hear something early tomorrow morning. Thanks again. |
continued prayers and well wishes for sweet winston. how is your baby doing? any update? this must be so hard and scary for you... |
How is your baby doing now ? |
With each day, Winston is doing better, but only slightly better. Tomorrow, he is having another round of tests to rule out liver or kidney failure and tests to determine his blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Winston was placed on the dog food Urinary SO to help with his kidney stones. Two days after we switched his food, he began having these symptoms. While Urinary SO is great for helping with kidney stones, it is full or corn, corn glucose meal, and other products that can dramatically effect/decrease a dog's blood sugar levels. Several of Winston's symptoms fit hypoglycemia, something that commonly occurs in Yorkies. Hopefully, we will find a solution tomorrow and we can get him back to his old self. If the tests tomorrow do not solve our issues, we will be visiting the University of Georgia's Vet Hospital next week. Our vet has already put in a referral, so we are at the top of the list for an appointment. Thanks for your concern! |
Just a note if something happens in the interim, just show up and go through the Emergency area. don't wait if you are in doubt about your Winston. Things can change with a pup pretty quickly, and don't feel constrained to wait for an appt at the vet hospital. |
