Chewie woke up limping hey guys and gals hope all of you are well. lil chewbacca woke up this morning with a limp. i thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. we went for our morning walk and he was limping/walking/running like a champion. the minute we went home, he started limping again. i took him to the vet. they noticed the limp. shaved his paw since there was a lot of hair and gave him an X-ray. the doctor found a black spot on one of his toes. i immediately feared the worst and asked...cancer? she immediately said no. definitely not. i just was curious if any of you have experienced any of this before? chews appetite is fine, still makes every attempt possible to eat my food, eats his food, drinks his water, goes batsh!t when someone comes to the door. thanks! |
Has he injured that toe/paw before? "Spot on the bone" in a human, and our minds go to osteomyelitis....... |
When you say a black spot, was it on a toe bone? If so, what was the diagnosis by the vet and what is being planned to diagnose the black spot? If it was on the flesh, same questions. |

I don't know how the vet could say it is definitely not cancer without a biopsy. I would certainly ask that question and ask her exactly what it is. Melanoma of the paw can be very serious. Don't mean to scare you, but I would just want to know what it is if I were you. |
thanks for all the support guys and gals. chewie woke up this morning. i put him on the ground and he just laid where he was put down. that concerned me, but then he started following me around throughout my house with his normal vigor and cute stroll. he peed and pooped and ate his breakfast like a champion. when i was going to take him on a short car ride, he was jumping in circles and showed no signs that yesterday even happened! which was very lovely. so far, he is not limping, although i am going to continue administering the pain meds the Vet prescribed - Deramaxx. i am going to continue to monitor him and restrict his activities. it wasn't a spot more as it was...shading of the bone. i just wikipediad osteomyelitis ... which seems like waviness. Quote:
the vet said that she will contact me on tuesday after the pain med administration is complete to check on chewie. if he continues to limp (i hope not) that they will forward the X-ray to the radiologist and see what happens. i am hoping that he continues to heal. thanks so much for the support! |

A black spot on the toe? Hmm... that's odd, I have no idea what that could be, but I'd definitely get another opinion. Also, I always like to mention since this happened to me. Jackson came up limping randomly one day. It ended up being lymes disease. He tested positive for it. So $400-some later after x-rays, etc, a simple lymes test and antibiotics revealed the problem. So I'd get a lymes test to be sure! |

they did run a blood test, but yes, i definitely will look into it! thanks! |
He's very cute! I hope your little Chewie will be fine. Keep us updated. |
Often a black or dark spot on the bone on X-ray can represent a lytic lesion from tumor or other destructive process. I think osteomyelitis in bone can appear dark also. I would definitely seek a second opinion and get some real diagnostics going to see what is causing the problem that is causing your dog this distress and pain. Maybe it is just an artifact and another set of x-rays can give better news. |
well good news guys! chewie has been great the past two days. its as though saturday morning never happened. he is back to his jovial and annoying self - trying to eat whatever i am eating and wanting to play non stop. there is no more limp and no more "ginger" walking. i still plan on resting him for about 5 days. but hopefully the limp was just a one time thing. still waiting to hear back on what the dark shade on the bone was. will keep you guys updated! |

I'm sure glad the limp is gone. If you don't get a satisfactory answer on the dark spot on the x-ray, seek a second opinion. Good luck and let us know what you find out. |
I am happy the limp is gone. I will be very curious and hopeful of some good news on the dark spot in the x-ray though. Please let us know what you find out.:) |

they also took out blood and ran some heart worm tests. everything came back negative so he's in good shape. the vet told me she would be consulting another vet, our main vet, on what the spot could be. will keep you guys updated! thanks! |
