Friend's 2-year-old Yorkie blind A friend just called and said her 2-year-old Yorkie started walking funny, so they took her to the vet. The vet said she's blind! They ran bloodwork and said everything looked fine and had no explanation. Vet has no idea what it could be, but referred her to a doggie optomologist. She called her Washington breeder to see if there was anything wrong with the rest of the litter, and it appears not. Anybody heard of anything like this: Sudden blindness? |
I never have......how sad |
I am very sorry for your friend's Yorkie. Here is an article on "Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration" in dogs. There was a member here a few months ago whose dog had the same thing. If I understand correctly, the vet community cannot pinpoint a cause for it. :( Sudden acquired retinal degeneration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
From the article: "SARD must be distinguished from other causes of sudden blindness that have no visible pathology, including retrobulbar optic neuritis, a tumor at the optic chiasm, or other central nervous system diseases." |
Thanks, Kristimo, you're the best. |
There was a lady on another site who came home one day and her little yorkie was blind. It turned out that it was from the ivermectrin. Has your friends little yorkie had any heart guard or that type of thing? Her little yorkie eventually got her sight back, and I'm praying the same happens for your friends yorkie! |

Only eye specialist only visits town once a month, so they're stuck in limbo. |
If she can rule out that it possibly came from meds, they need to look for a Chiari malformation. Chiari can show up at any time in a dogs life but the majority of cases are diagnosed between the ages of 2 & 3 yrs old. Is the dog having any other symptoms like slight to severe drunken gate, head tilt even very slightly to one direction or any other thing out of the ordinary ? With Vision loss caused be Chiari, the eye looks perfectly normal & this because it is, well the actual eye ball is normal but a fluid cyst caused be the malformation will often press on the optic nerve causing blindness but vision will be restored with proper treatment. So if they can't find any other problem, this is what I would be checking for. There is another YT member with a pup who's name is Bella who's pup also lost her vision from a Chiari but I can't remember the username at this time. Bella regained her sight after treatment began. |
Thanks, everybody. It gives me some information to pass onto her. My guess is no on heart worm meds because it's not a problem in Alaska and I don't think they've traveled. I'll pass it on, though, thanks! |
I just reread your 1st post here & with the dog being 2 yrs old & the wobbly gait I would be headed to the neuro as blindness does not normally cause a drunken or wobbly gait. Do you remember Bella ? |
I think Bellas mommas username was MLY but I don't know if she's even still a member. I think it was just after I joined. I will see if I can find the thread tomorrow. Also wanted to say that my neighbor purchased a pup from the same lady I got my Sassy from , my Sassy had Chiari but never had blindness but my neighbors pup did have the blindness & was diagnosed with Chiari 2 wks before 2nd B-Day. |

Agree... I'd be headed asap to a neuro... |
Keep us informed Mike. I hope her yorkie does get her sight back. |
Has a bile acid test been done? Blindness is a symptom of liver shunt. It can also correct itself once the liver issue is controlled. |
Praying that you find an answer soon. |
