Your questions list is a good one....I would also ask detailed questions about the repair especially if it is a CCL. There are different repairs and you need to know what the surgeon is doing and why that repair is being suggested for Sugar. |
Thank you again ladyjane- you have been such a help! I don't think I'll have a terrible time getting a referral but I do think I'll have to flat out ask for one as you suggested. The bupremex worked like a charm! I gave it to him at 9 to be sure he reacted to it okay. He slept through the night and has still not cried at all today. I guess I need to give him another dose but he's doing so well I've been holding off. |
You are doing all the right things for Sugar. He is going to be fine! :) |
Nikki; often the websites of the specialist have a referral form, this you can fax into your regular vet' and say please fill in, fax to this number. Please expedite this request, as my pup is in pain; and I need to get him in to the specialist for treatment. Or if I lived closeby; I'd personally pre fill out the form; and show up at the vet's office; I think what your general vet is doing; ie reluctance to give you a referral is very very unprofessional. |
I'll call my vet first thing tomorrow and ask again for a referral. I know they aren't eager to offer them and would prefer to do the surgery themselves but I don't think they'll refuse. I asked for one just yesterday and that was 11 on a Saturday where they were closing at noon for a workshop so they haven't given me a runaround or anything. I was surprised by the receptionist saying she'd try to get me 'a number or card or something' but it was a receptionist and not a vet saying that. I'm going to ask for a referral and see what happens and if I need to, ask for one directly to the surgeon I'm considering. I think in my worry I've probably overstated my concerns about my vet. Please take some of my previous posts with a grain of 'freaked out and worried sick' salt lol. I feel a bit silly but I've now remembered that about 3 years ago or so, before my vet was performing the surgery and when Sugar was first diagnosed, we were discussing possible surgery then, and he was going to refer me to a surgeon just outside of Gainesville who was formerly associated with UF. So my guess is that's who he'll refer me to now. Sugar is still sleeping- no pain, but wouldn't eat breakfast. I've still not given him any meds this morning. I'm just so eager to see a specialist and feel some relief that he's at least been properly diagnosed. Why do things always happen on weekends? C'mon Monday!! |
I am glad Sugar is resting with out pain. My Pixie had LP surgery a couple years ago. It came on suddenly after walking off the bed to get away from Nikki. They usually always use ramps and stairs. I didn't know she even had LP. I knew Cali and Nikki did but not her. Pixie did not do well at all with the pain. I took he twice to the ER clinic in the same night because I didn't like the first vet so I waited until a shift change and took her back. They did Xrays and said she needed surgery. I wanted her regular vet to see her and she agreed she needed surgery, whereas with Cali who has grade 4 in both legs she always took a wait and see approach. So she referred me to the surgeon that had done Cali's spay and liver biopsy when she was a puppy and very sick. I really trusted her and after 4 opinions I opted for the surgery. They told me when I made the appt with the surgeon to withhold food and water after midnight in case they were to do the surgery the day of the surgeon appointment. They did end up doing it that day and everything went fine. it is so important to trust the person doing the surgery. I hope you can find a great surgeon and Sugar feels better soon. Ladyjane was very helpful to me when Pixie had her problem! |
