Worried & Confused... Hi Everyone! So, I'm not sure if anyone has seen my others posts but to recap... Tank supposedly had kennel cough, he has been on different meds for over a month now, clavamox, then butorphanol (sp?) and Cefadroxil, then back to clavamox now with baytril, with robitussin dm throughout all of this. I went back to the vet Saturday and that is when she changed him the last time (put him on baytril and clavamox, with robitussin) and I demanded blood work and an X-ray, she insisted I did not need them but I made her do blood work at least. I just got a voicemail that his white blood cells are elevated but she said to wait another week before doing anything, but his "cough" has only gotten worse. I called the emergency care center I took him to a couple wks ago so speak with the vet who helped Tank there and she said she highly recommends I do at least an X-ray immediately because he should have showed signs of improvement by now being on baytril for a few days....so I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice or opinions? I'm just so stressed because I'm getting such mixed signals between the vets?! My gut says I need to have him looked at mor and get X-rays etc, but should I bring him to a different vet? Or just demand my regular vet do X-rays?! Oh, he is also eating normal and is not lethargic, he is very playful...acts like a normal yorkie puppy.....which is my only sanity right now!! |
I agree with the Emergency Vet and x-rays. Also may need a Rx change to something more effective. |
I'm sorry your little one has been through so much. I've read that kennel cough can sometimes take months to get rid of, but not always. The one thing you do want to know is that kennel cough can lead to pneumonia if not treated successfully. I wish I had some advice for you. Follow your intuition on this and if you want a second opinion from another vet, do not hesitate to do so. |
I agree... trust your instincts ;) Prayers Tank is better very soon. |
I agree with x-rays & wanted to say that just because his coughing is worse does not mean it's a bad sign. He may not have been on the rite meds all along & now the batryl may be working & if this is the case he could cough more as the meds kill a bacteria the gunk will loosen up & has to come out so he may cough more. It's kind of like a human with pneumonia at least when I had pneumonia the week after I started on meds my coughing was much more often & more productive. One thing the vet can do , is do a culture of his mucus & this will tell if he's on the rite antibiotic or not. |
It could still just be kennel cough. There's no good reason to wait on an X-ray at this point though. |
Thank you everyone for your thoughts!! I brought Tank in to get X-Rays this morning and just got the call from Radiologist saying lungs etc look all clear and no signs of anything bad, thank god!! So I'm hoping the baytril will wipe out whatever my poor little guy has!! |
I agree that more tests should be done. My vet always runs several tests when anything comes up just to eliminate other possibilities. I know it get expensive but dragging out the dx is not good either. Good luck with your little one. Cherie |
I know what you are going through...........Rylee Belle had Kennel Cough when she was only about 4 months old. It seemed like it took forever to go away. It did though.......................your baby will be fine but I know how hard it is to hear that cough and not worry! Keep us posted on progress. |
At least your mind is at ease that his little lungs are clear. GEt Well soon Tank! |
I'm glad to know his lungs are clear. I hope he's 100% very soon.:) |
Thank you everyone for all your support!! I will keep you all posted on his progress!! We will be going back to the vet Saturday for another check up, and hopefully he's a little better by then!! |
Praying for your baby's speedy recovery!!! |
I hope your Tank starts feeling better soon. Follow your instincts, I'm a big believer that when you start feeling something strongly in this way, well there is a reason. Follow them, and do what you need to help your baby. Better safe than sorry. Keep us posted! |
I don't know if anyone is still following this thread, but tomorrow is Tank's last baytril tab (7th day) and he has also been on clavamox and hydrocodine cough syrup as well for the wk, and he is still coughing and horribly coughing at night...he has also began having potty issues with diarrhea he did it twice while on my lap and once in his bed, he doesn't whimper or anything to let us know he needs to go out, and the times it happened on my lap he was laying down sleeping!! So idk what's going on but I feel awful for him and I feel like the medicine is torturing the little guy!! I'm wondering if anyone's baby coughs for any other reason, allergies? He's just been on every medicine for kennel cough and it's been over a month and a half I just realized and he has not gotten any better so I'm wondering if he's being misdiagnosed?? |
