Possible Lymes disease? Hi all. So I posted on here a few weeks ago regarding Lilly. She was recently diagnosed with microvascular dysplasia and has been put on liver protective medication in addition to low residue dog food and probiotics. On Saturday we came home from a run and Lilly was shivering. We thought she might be hungry so we gave her her dinner and some chicken broth with water ( with the wet food and baby food she doesn't drink water all that much so we mixed it with broth to get her to drink). She ate And drank and stopped shivering. Later on we noticed that she was having difficulty climbing her doggie stairs. She would attempt to go up but had a hard time. Once she was up she was hesitant Togo down as well. We also noticed she had been licking her front paw a lot. Sunday she seemed a little better but still had some hesitancy on the stairs. I tried to touch her and didn't hear any whimper or whining. Today the dog walker came by and she noticed Lilly seemed off. She was shaky again and when the walker went to pet her she backed away which is unusual for her. I called the. Et and were going tomorrow but I just wanted to hear thoughts. She's usually so active and she's quite lethargic. Side note she's been eating peeing and pooping normally. Also she gets interceptor and frontline every month like clock work. She's only 2 and we live in white plains ny. Lilly is never in woods etc. she just goes for walks around the block. Both the vet and the walker seem to think it might be Lyme disease. Any thoughts/ experiences would be very much appreciated. Thanks |
It does sound like it could be Lyme disease. Have you had any engorged ticks on her? Of course, it's always possible that you missed one. I always check for ticks. I've only ever had 2 and both were on Mickey. I hate ticks. They totally gross me out so I have a bit of a phobia with them. i hope she feels better soon... |
Wondering what the vet said? Prayers Lilly is feeing better today and it wasn't anything serious. |
Hope you solved the problem. My little Nutmeg (3 1/2 lbs.) had the same symptoms last fall. I was sure it was Lyme, which she tested positive for, but vet thought she may also have Addison's Disease. If you didn't have any luck with diagnosis, or if she still has symptoms after she's been on the antibiotics for a while, you may want to do that test. Good luck! |
So the vet did the Lyme test and it was negative and that entire day he checked her out and even had her up and down the stairs. He basically said that sometimes dogs just have off days and and she could have stepped on something during a walk. She has been doing fine since then but today she seems a little lethargic. Not sure if she's reacting to this crazy weather or if something else is wrong because I've noticed at night or right after waking up from a nap her nose and ears are really warm. Doctor took her temp and she's normal but I just feel like something is wrong with her. Any thoughts? |
It sounds like she's on other medication. Many times the Lymes test comes up with a "false positive" result, especially if they're on other meds. Do you know if she had the "Snap" test? I'd go with my gut feeling. If you think there is something wrong, you probably are right. If she was bitten by a deer tick, you probably wouldn't see it because they are so small. I see you live in NY and I've heard that Lymes is really bad this year due to the moderate winter we had. Maybe you should get a second opinion. That's what I did, and it made all the difference. I have 2 Yorkies and they both have had Lymes. I'm in MN and the ticks are really bad here too. They don't have to be out in the woods to be bitten. Keep us posted! Oh, also I found a lot of helpful info. from Yahoo groups. I joined the Addison's group, but I'm sure there would be one for Lymes as well. Good luck! |
Did the vet do any other blood work? When she gets lethargic, are you giving her anything like nutrical?? (just came to mind) |
The vet didn't do any other bloodwork. He just examined her physically and did the Lyme's test. As soon as I wrote that post about her being lethargic, once I got up from the couch she decided to play/run/nip at me and be the crazy dog she usually is. I suppose that maybe I'm being a little hyper sensitive just because we went through hell trying to figure out that she had Microvascular Dysplasia and the symptoms weren't all that clear. She did have trouble with the stairs for roughly two days and then she has been fine since. I do notice though that she doesn't really drink water. The vet said since she eats wet food plus baby food that she is getting a ton of moisture there and just isn't going to be as thirsty as she normally would when she was on the kibble, plus he even examined her and there was not one hint of dehydration. One thing that I find hysterical with my high-maintenance little Lilly is that if I put some chicken broth in her water she suddenly drinks like she came back from the desert...... So far so good with her....let's see what the future holds. Thanks so much for all of the responses!!! |
