I rescued a liver shunt baby, so I don't know much but I do know they shouldn't be eating protein...should she be feeding Macie chicken? |
I think they are leaning toward kidney problem. I think someone here may have suggested liver shunt. I wonder if she got an infection from a cut from the bone fragments, then maybe dehydration led to kidney problem. Sounds like keeping her hydrated is the important thing right now. |
She is responsive and walking around. Shes also drinking on her own. Its just sometimes her saliva build up is really bad due to her being sick. I try to keep her cleaned up as much as I can. |
I wish I knew more that could help you. If Macie is having problems with her kidneys, she will need to have more fluids tomorrow. The toxins might build up in system, and that causes nausea. My thoughts and prayers remain with you and your baby. |

sending prayers for macie! i'm so sorry to hear that you and your baby are going through this. my heart is really breaking for you and it is so hard not knowing for sure what is wrong! i am near chicago (about 30 miles south of city) and there are many options and several specialists to chose from. many of them are 24 hours and do accept emergencies. if this was my baby, i would be looking for another place that could see us right away. here's a link to find specialists in your area. ACVIM a friend of mine highly recommends this place. they gave his dog an extra 20 months of quality life after cancer diagnosis. they accept emergencies and are open 24/7/365. Veterinary Specialties at Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center also a friend of mine used this clinic for her kitty and said it is one of the least expensive specialty clinics in the area and she highly recommends them. it is not located in the city, but they also accept ers 24/7/365. - Veterinary Specialty Center i wish there was more that i could do to help, but please know that you and your sweet macie will be in my thoughts and prayers. i will be looking for an update so please keep us posted. hugs to you and macie!!! |
Do you ladies think it'll be ok if I give Macie a bath? Shes really dirty from the fluids they give her and the saliva. |
If she is feeling OK, I don't think it would hurt her. Just keep her warm. I always heat up my bathroom so she will be warm after her bath. This is where I blow my baby dry and fix her hair. Have a warm towel ready to wrap her up in after the bath. I know you want her clean. I would feel the same way. How is Macie doing today? Did she get into the specialist today? |

Shes doing ok today. Keeping a steady weight at 2lbs 3oz. Shes eating and drinking. Shes a little more alert this evening. She seems to be resting more comfortably. She even let out a little bark today when I had a visitor ring my doorbell. :) |
It sounds like you are doing everything right for her. I'm glad to hear she is doing better today and is eating and drinking. Thanks for the update.:) |
Macie is wagging her tail more and is walking a little faster now. YAY! :p This makes me so happy, I feel like crying. :D |
My prayers are with you and your baby! Please let us know on Monday as soon as possible how she is doing! I'm keeping good thoughts! |

Macie's blood work came back the same. Shes a little bit more anemic and her BUN is still around 131. He did a test on her liver and it came back 120 also. He said its high but hes seen some dogs results come back around 300. Not sure what that means. He did ask how she acted when she was a puppy. She seemed fine as a puppy. I guess thats why he didnt think it was Liver Shunt. Now Im not sure. Specialist at 10:30am Monday. |
Macie has been a really picky eater today. She didnt eat much chicken. Can I give her pure pumpkin? Im not sure what else to try to get her to eat. |
I think you could offer pumpkin and/or rice. Her tummy isn't going to hold much at a time, she's so little. Be sure she is drinking. When Jazz was little and sick i would give him a little water in a syringe every 30 minutes or so. Praying she is soon well. |

Ive posted the link of Macie's blood work from yesterday, in case anyone would like to see it or give any advice on what you may think she has. The file was too big to actually attach. Sorry. http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/2818/scan8zb.jpg |

I would be extremely concerned if this were my pup. |
Why isnt your vet explaining the results to you |

Now hes back to possibly thinking its Liver Shunt. I seriously HATE this vet. My boyfriend wants me to sue him, but Im not sure I could actually do that. Seems like a hassle. Im just focused on Macie right now. I had an appt last week with a specialist, but since I wasnt referred they gave me the run around and I got pushed to the side. Ive paid this vet $1250 and had Macie sick for a month and still no answers. I know her blood work is bad right now, but she seems to be doing better. Thats why Im not rushing her to the ER this weekend. I finally got approved for Care Credit yesterday, so now I dont have to stress so much over the cost of her treatment. |
I am SO glad you got the Care Credit!! That is awesome! :) I am sure that you will get some answers from the specialist. Hopefully your Macie will be diagnosed soon and whatever it is treated!! :) Oh...and as for her labs and the way she is acting. That is always true...you treat the pup, not the labs! As long as you can keep her hydrated and keep her blood sugar up, she should be ok until Monday. She and you are in my thoughts and prayers. |
Oh Im glad you got care credit at least thats one less worry. I hope you can get some answers monday. Im continuing to pray for Macie |
When seeing a specialist, do they normally diagnose them on the first visit? Im so anxious for Monday and Im praying for answers. Idk how many more days I can take of not knowing and wondering. |

I am sure you know this....but just make sure you take all of her records, including tests and xrays! |

Does her abdomen look bloated to you at all? The top portion on the labs has to do with her red blood cells.... very concerning to me... also the liver values are fine ( all normal), An increased BUN can be caused by dehydration (or made worse by it). |
Her liver values might be wnl but her ammonia level is a bit high. Again, I think a specialist will unravel all of it. |

Keep all her tests, labs etc, together and keep them handy incase she worsens, I'm sure your doing the right things, any little improvement IS an improvement! Just remember if she declines at all, go to an emergency vet...keep trying to get her to eat and drink and keep her stimulated. I'm glad your getting to the Specialist on Monday, hopefully this will begin the healing for your pup, and for you. I know how stressful these moments are...good luck and keep posting. |
