Not an emergency but need help... My yorkie, Rucker, is 2 1/2 years old, and was groomed on Friday. He got a REALLY short cut, and has what appears to be "razor burn" on his underneath and backside. I feel so sorry for him because it is bothering him so much. I called the after-hours vet, and she suggested putting silvadene ointment for burns, but I was hesitant because he is licking his "wound" so much. I called my pharmacist, and she told me not to put the silvadene ointment on him because he doesn't need to lick it off. HE WON'T STOP LICKING THE AREA. I have heard that aquaphor ointment is ok to put on him because it is safe if he licks it, so I put some on him. The problem is he just licked it right off. What do I do? He is constantly either licking the area or scooting his backside across the carpet. I don't know what to do. Help! |
do you have a cone to put on him so he cannot get to it, poor baby |
I do not have a cone and also don't know where I can get one right now. He's so little. Do they make cones that small? He's 4 lbs. Also...he has been doing A LOT of trembling/shaking since the grooming. His hair was pretty long before, and like I said is really short now. Is it his body temperature trying to get used to the cut causing him to tremble, or is he scared/sick? I have him wrapped in a blanket, but as soon as he jumps down he starts licking again. |
vitamin E oil is good for burns and abrasions and won't hurt him if he licks it, but Maybe you could put him in a onesie while inside and for during the night. His licking it will keep it very irritated and possibly get infected. |

Poor little guy. Do you have a little shirt you can put on him for now? For future use Mom to Hot Rod sells fabric cones that are great to have just in case. She ca make it any size you need. I hope he feels better soon. |
Oh my goodness...why didn't I think of a onesie?? That will work perfectly! Thank you SO MUCH! I will also try the vitamin E too. |
Thank ALL of you for answering my questions so quickly. I can always find the answers I need here. You guys are awesome. I will keep you updated. |
If he's shaking and licking constantly and scooting, he's probably miserable! I would take him to the Emergency Vet and let them give this baby something to ease him and help him rest. Sounds awful! |
Poor little fella, hope he feels better soon. I hope you told this groomer about the burn...she needs to be more careful.:( |
If you are still looking for something in the morning to help your little guy, try some organic coconut oil. It is very soothing and helps heal, and it is safe to lick. I use Nutiva from the Vitamin Shoppe. Make sure it is organic without any preservatives -- it works the best. I agree with Patti's recommendation for a Kiss-E collar from Mom to Hot Rod to add to your first aid kit. I hope your poor little guy gets some relief tonight. If the burn still looks bad in the morning, I would consider going to your regular vet. I hope it isn't a burn from a dryer. |

I agree with the organic coconut oil! I use CocoTherapy which is made just for doggies. But the kind at the Vitamin Shoppe that is organic without perservatives will work good too! I would also go back to the groomers, and get a refund, because that should not happen at a grooming salon. I used to work at a grooming salon and boutique and I always made sure to go back there to check out the doggies and comfort the smaller pooches that were scared and make sure they were okay, because I never want a dog to be uncomfortable . If you go back they should give you a refund. I will say prayers for your fur-baby in the mean time! XO(: |
I don't know if it's a good idea or not, but someone on here mentioned using aloe gel for shaver burns just recently. |
Aw, poor baby:( I hope he's much better now! If my groomer did that to one of mine, they'd no longer be my groomer AND they would be paying any vet bills resulting from this. If he's not much improved today, he may need to see the vet for some special cream or meds to help the healing. |
How is your baby doing now? Much much better, I hope:) |
