Reaction to Rabbies Vac This isn't about my yorkie and I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place but here it goes. Saturday we went to the vet with our Basset Hounds Cleo and Chloe. Chloe had a bad reaction last year and we weren't going to do it again but we figured it was because they didn't give benedryl before the shot. This year we made sure that they both had benedryl before the shot. We got half way home and Chloe went crazy. She started screaming and throwing her head back. We made a u turn and ran right back to the vet. By the time we got there she just collapsed on the floor and they carried her into the back room. Cleo at this time was fine. They gave her two shots of benedryl and steriods and after awhile she went home. We ere only home for awhile when Cleo went crazy, by this time the vet had closed and we took her into the emergency vet. Again she was also given two shots of benedryl and steriods and we took home after awhile. We were not home for an hour when Chloe started again and we went back to the emergeny with Chloe. She was medicated again. After that the rest of the night went okay. Did anybody's furbaby ever have a reaction to the vaccine I know we are yorkie people but this is the only forum I belong to who love their dogs. We do have a yorkie named Zach but he had no problems with his vaccines |
I'm so sorry this happened but I'm so glad for you that you where able to get them treated to prevent further complications. This is not unique. The rabies is one of the most potent vaccines we give to our pets, it has great potential for adverse reactions. You might read this blog it has important info regarding this subject.... The Rabies Vaccine for Dogs: Side Effects and Precautions You Can Take Adverse Reactions to Vaccine: Treatment and Management | Truth4Dogs This should be documented in your dogs files. You might want to consider an exemption so they don't have to have any more. The risk of another reaction increases with addition vaccines....It looks like N.Y. allows for this. RABIES LAWS IN THE UNITED STATES as of 6/16/10 Good luck and I'm so glad your pups are alright.... |

My dog Ralph almost had a reaction not for rabies but for some new type of shot that was made mandatory for my state, they said i did not need to give him the bendrly before so I did not. The next day he was panting then he would not eat then he started shaking so i rushed him to the vet, but he was not having one thank goodness. I wish I could not let him get the shots but I worry he will get rabies or something. :( |
I'd get a medical exemption from your vet for both of them. Giving them steroids before the vaccine causes the immune system to not react and will not produce antibodies, which is what a vaccine is supposed to do. If your vet refuses, I would change vets and find one that will give the exemtion. These reactions will get worse each time and are life threatening. |
My little girl never had a reaction before, but when my vet discovered that Ashley had an enlarged heart when she was almost eleven, he would not allow her to have any immunizations after that. She lived one month shy of her seventeenth birthday, and we went on daily walks without any problems. I'm sure she had built up an immunity after years of having shots. I live on Long Island also, and Ashley remained fairly healthy without having the vaccines for six years of her life. I'm sorry that you had such a scary with your babies. |
