any help? please so im not sure what to think about this.. this is my almost 4 year old yorkie Breezy.. i have done research and i think that this is something called "backwards sneezing" however iv watched videos of both the sneezing and the collapsed trachea and im not sure which my baby is doing.. he usually does it when he is really excited or eats really fast. but sometimes he will be sleeping and wake up, do it for a few seconds then go back to sleep. please let me know cause i hate not knowing.. should i take him to the vet??? |
ugh please someone help. how do i add a video?? |
Reverse sneezing is pretty common. But, it can be confused for Collapsed Trachea. Your vet can tell if the dog is doing a reverse sneeze. I would take him, so you have a proper diagnosis. |

Reverse sneezing... common most Yorkies do it. |
I just saw a video today with a dog called "Puggle"(something like that) and it was reverse sneezing and a woman squeezed his nostrils closed and he stopped. She said something about that causing his palette to release or something. I wish I could remember what thread that video was on! I am going to try that when Tibbe RS's again. He only very occasionally does it and it may not work on him but going to try. If I see that thread, I will link you to that post. |
Its reverse sneezing Laddy has done that his entire life mostly after drinking water. ;) |
My Willow does that at times and it's reverse sneezing. |

When Betty Boop reverse sneezes, I very, very gently blow into her nose. It works every time for me. It somehow relaxes her and she stops. |
thanks everyone! i feel 100% better that hes okay.. i honestly dont know what i would do without him :/ another question is it still harmless if he does it alot? i dont mean ALOT but whenever i come home from being gone all day he usually does it from being excited.. or from running around outside.. is it actually hurting him? cause it sounds like he is in pain :( |
Oh, yes, if he does it alot, I would take him to the vet. And take a video with you of him doing it. |
Definitely reversed sneezing. My King Charles Cavalier did it all the time. The first time it darn near scared the life out of me. I called the vet and she listened to him doing it and that is what she said it was. She instructed me to cover his nose to block the airway and it would stop and it worked. With my Bella she has done it also, when she gets very excited or after drinking water too quickly. Next time it happens try taking your hand and holding it over the nose, it worked for me. |
Like yorkietalkjilly said, if he does it a lot, I think he should be seen by a vet. Is there a way to let the vet see the video also? Since it gets triggered by excitement & he also does it in the middle of the night, I'd be worried that it's something else other than reverse sneezing. Good Luck to your pup & hope to hear good news. |
If he does it a lot I would take him to the vet. If he only does it on occasion and it's mostly when he is excited or just drank water I wouldn't worry. Georgie does it as well and it seems very common. I blow at Georgie's face (well his nose) to get him to stop. That works well. I watched the video and can totally relate to it Georgie does the same thing and I was so worried. Thank God for YT;) |
I noticed Betty Boop was reverse sneezing after she drank water. Someone on YT suggested I place her water bowl on the floor. I had both her food and water bowl raised off the floor. She no longer does it after she drinks water. She only seems to do it when she gets excited. |
