Puppy with blood in stool as soon as we got home We got our baby tonight! Yay! He was a little pukey in the car which I chalked up to nerves. He never barked or whined. We had a long drive (4 hours) and he perked up as soon as we got home. Checked the place out and was very playful. About 20 min after being home, he pooped on the floor and was soft (not liquid) but at the end there were a few drops of blood. How worried should I be? I'm so worried I feel like I just brought home a newborn! ps: I'm sure there are millions of topics on this but search is not working. I keep getting an "out of space" error message. Apologies for repeating this topic. |
One occurrence of a few drops of blood in an adult wouldn't be an emergency (usually). But this is a very small pup. Any amount of soft stool can potentially dehydrate pup and blood isn't a good sign. Could be stress. Vaccines aren't finished, so that's a concern. I would call the ER and ask them to assess the situation over the phone. If they want you to come in, don't hesitate. If they say it can wait, watch closely throughout the night and go in the morning. I would definitely call and ask and not just wait. |
Under stress, it is not uncommon for these babies to break with coccidosis....you are going to the vet tomorrow? Tell him what he is doing, he may not do it again if he settles in quickly....the vet will check him for coccidosis and if he has it, he will give him some Albon with Flagyl and possibly Amoxicillin.....Congratulations on your new baby.....!!! |
Welcome to YT, and congratulations on your new puppy. I would get the little guy into the vet tomorrow, better to have him checked over rather that being unsure that all is well. |
Thanks guys! I called the vet last night and they said probably stress. Wait to see how he is this morning. And this morning we have solid poop, no blood and a happy puppy. So relieved. Thanks for the advice! |
Congratulations on your new baby, and YES is like bringing a newborn home, and another yes, STRESS can cause blood in the stool and vomiting on a young puppy, glad he is back to happy puppy this morning.. hugs, |
