Severity of LP Hi, My younger yorkie was limping/not using one of her back legs all the time and I took her to the vet today and he said she has LP. He said it was grade 2, but it is a low cost place and they didn't take x-rays or anything, this was just his assessment from feeling it. But since being home it keeps moving back out of place every time I fix it. From what I have read [on YT and the web in general] as far as the levels go it seems like she is more of a grade 3 since it keeps happening, but this is just as of today. I was wondering if people who have more experience about this could let me know what they think. She is only 10 months old and he said surgery won't be an option until she is at least 1 and done growing. I have contacted the place I am probably eventually going to do surgery here in Houston. I just I guess was wondering how urgent do I need to make this? [In your opinion of course] Thanks so much! |
A vet does not have to xray a knee in order to grade the degree of LP. Since you are in Houston, I highly recommend that you seek a second opinion at Gulf Coast Veterinary Services. Dr. Brian Beale is a surgeon I have used many times. He would be happy to evaluate her and would not recommend surgery unless it was definitely necessary. I do not believe it is true that you should wait until she is finished growing. I just caught that you wanted to know if this is urgent. My understanding is that a puppy with LP can be very serious because it can cause the bones to grow incorrectly. I don't think it is an emergency, but I don't think you should wait for an opinion from a specialist. |
Thanks. My vet recommended a couple of places and I called them yesterday, I will call the place you suggested tomorrow [well later today, I am kind of a night owl]. And I will make an appointment for next week if possible at one of the places. I feel bad that she keeps limping around, but only occasionally does it stop her from running and playing. :) |

Update on Somi's LP We had an appointment with Dr. Beale at Gulf Coast Veterinary today. And I was right, he said she has grade 3. He said it might have just progressed that quickly and could have been more of a grade 2 last week. Well that being said, he said she needs to have surgery as soon as possible to avoid arthritis or anything happening to her ACL. So we will schedule it as soon as I figure out my schedule with school and with Joli and when I figure out exactly how I am going to pay for it. This is definitely an unexpected expense, but I do not want her to be in pain so I will figure something out. |

Her surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday and they said she will need to stay over night. I think that will be the hardest part for me--her being away overnight. But I felt really comfortable with everyone I met there, so I know she will be okay. I will update next week after the surgery. Thanks for the advice and thoughts. :) |
