Trying to find a Specialist I have been searching for a specialist in the Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania tri state area who is experienced with treating collapsing trachea. Please, I would really appreciate anyone who knows of someone especially good with yorkies, and who cares. Right now we are just restricting Parker's diet to see if he can lose some weight. Hoping that will help. |
Treatment consists of medications to relieve coughing, opening airways (bronchial dilators) and for staying calm. The University of Tennessee is researching surgical procedures and prosthetic devices for use in surgical repair. |
Have your tried UPENN? You could also try calling Animerge like places for referrals. You vet doesn't know on anyone? |
|
There are surgical procedures that can be done. Contact a vet.college in your area....if they dont do it, they will possibly be able to refer you. Also, Ladyjane has given a link above... |
Thanks for your responses. My vet gave some steroids, but I am not real comfortable continuing Parker's care with her. |
I would go with medical treatments first! Many pups with CT can be managed medically. None of the surgical procedures are that successful and/or long term solutions. |

Here is a link that you may find helpful in understanding CT: Tracheal Collapse I have had a few CT pups and all were managed medically. |
My vet told me she would only do surgery as a last resort. Good luck in what ever you decide. Its a scary thing to deal with. |
I live in cherry hill nj I had two dogs with ct, I use a great vet in nj Burl moore driven in moorestown nj dr g took care of fife for over two years. I had oxygen at home went to Penn then Cornell but fife was not a candidate for surgery We also used Lenape vet in west Chester pa to get a script for marax, it works well for dogs with ct, he has it compounded. Fife was pretty much on any med he could be on. If you have any more questions I would be happy to answer. The dr at Penn who specialized in ct moved to Cornell we went to see him there, but my regular vet took care of fife pretty well. I learned after a few months what fife needed when and how much. Fife was super thin weight wasn't his issue, I tried to keep him calm he was such a happy dog seeing my friends often put him into an attack. My shaffer only had three attacks total over two months, it will be a year in may that I had to put shaffer to sleep, compared to fife who had attacks not as bad for over two years. I just prayed the attacks were few and far between. June will be two years that I had to put fife to sleep. I know how horrible ct is, that noise you never want to hear again. I'm so sorry your dog has ct i know how devastating it is. |
I agree with ladyjane, even if fife or shaff were able to get the surgery I'm not certain I would do it. Fife had 2 hip replacements and surgery on his grade 4 lp before he was two, the surgery for ct is less than a success, at best, and most of the time the dog needs to stay on steroids the rest of his her life, that is less than ideal, it's hard to keep a dog on steroids not to want to over eat or drink. Steroids worked miracles for fife but I would not want to be on long term. |

Thank you everyone I cannot get out of this funk. I am sorry to all of you who have had to deal with this. It is depressing to see your best friend suffer, and hard to push what might come in the future out of my thoughts. I installed Jumicam on my phone to watch Parker through my home lap top. He just gets way too excited looking out the window, and I can talk to him through Jumicam while I'm at work. I am now trying to get an appointment with a radiologist specialist at Penn to have one of those digital radiography, I think that is what it is. The specialist isn't taking any appointments until April, and they don't have her schedule yet. Sheesh! They said to call back next week. |
I went to Penn then Cornell then to see dr Weiss He is the best for ct you may get in with him before Penn,, He saw my dog fife, you can google dr chick Weiss and read all his papers on ct in dogs. I'm a radiologist for people we looked at fifes scans together but nothing could be done for him. I know how heartbreaking it is. I'm so sorry Penn was great with fife, he had his hips and knees done at Penn, just so you know and I didn't be prepared if you are going to do surgery, they usually do it the next day you leave your dog after the appointment. That is what happened both times I was at Penn when Fife had surgery be prepared to wait most of the day. Chick Weisse, VMD, DACVS | Animal Medical Center |

diet Has anyone tried Holistique Blendz Adult Dog Food? I had been mixing it with Parker's regular Blue Buffalo, but he has been throwing up. I had heard that someone else tried it and they said the weight just fell off. Not the case with Parker. |
I'm sure most won't agree with me on this and for sure I'm not an expert on ct but I did have two dogs with ct, I nearly tortured myself and my dogs to get the weight down fife was about 7 pounds pre diet and 5.5 post diet, he was always hungry and miserable. The steroids to make him breath better made him hungry. The weight loss I can't say helped at all. He wasn't overweight by any means. My shaffer on ten otherhand was chubby a tea pot,,, he was close to 12 pounds but he was short he lost 3 pounds I was determined to get them both to get the weight down so I knew I did everything I could. We switched to life's abundance food, amnd ziwi peak as treats. I also made spinach and brusslesprouts as treats both my dogs loved. I don't know anything about the food you mentioned, but from one person who beat herself up to try to do everything I could for my dog, the weight loss was of no signifigant help. I'm sure others will disagree with me but that was my expeience with both of my dogs. |
I will have to try the life's abundance food. He seemed perfect at seven pounds, and last weight was 11.3 pounds! That makes me feel horrible. When he wants something, he kicks around his stainless steel bowls and makes such a racket! naughty, but funny too |
I wanted to update: Parker had his chest xrays and fluoroscopy at MJRV uPenn. He unfortunately has mainstream bronchi collapse also, which I didn't expect. Right now we are giving hydrocodone/homatrop and theophlline. Very upsetting. But I was very happy with Dr. Clarke. These people were so compassionate! |
BTW Parker is down to 10.4 pounds. Yes, he is a tortured soul, though. |
I'm so sorry. I know how hard it is, Penn is great he is in good care by both you and them. Did you happen to ask about the marax, I know it worked wonders for fife for months. |
No I don't know about marax. I will be sure to email Dr. Clarke. Thanks for keeping in touch. |

He didn't really care too much for the treats, but likes the food. |
