Peeing in Small Puddles
 

Piper is 6 months old. We got her at 4 months old. When we got her she was peeing excessively in small puddles. We brought her to the vet and since she was too tiny to get a urine sample, they treated her with antibiotics for a UTI. When she went for her follow up visit...they were able to get a urine sample and the vet said a UTI wasn't present and neither was an infection. My issue is that she is still peeing in small puddles all the time (not as much as before, but still frequently). Immediately following drinking water she will pee. Sometimes she will even pee while she is drinking water. Sometimes she will even squat and no pee will come out. I do not understand what is going on with her. Her pee is a normal yellow color. She does not do this over night. During the nighttime she is able to hold it and does one big pee on her potty pad in the morning. So at least we know she is capable of holding it. We are having to clean our floors constantly. I know puppies are small and have small bladders. But this seems to be excessive. When she is playing she will not pee...but I always feel like I need to watch her to make sure she doesn't "go" anywhere she isn't supposed to when she is out of her x-pen. Have any of you ever experienced this? I feel so bad for my little girl.

Well my Moms cat is prone to UTI's and those are her symptoms. It sounds like to me that she has a UTI- Esp if she is squatting and nothing is coming out :confused:

Maybe you should get a 2nd opinion?

Ok - I am going to call the vet. My concern is that she was experiencing these symptoms and was tested for a UTI and it came back negative, which was suprising. I am not sure what else it could be? She is such a sweet little girl, I just want to figure out what is going on :(

I would think if it were a bladder infection she couldn’t hold it at night either. My guess is she has a very tiny bladder and hasn’t learned to hold it yet, urine production does slow down at night. Basically, she's not housebroken. I would limit the territory that she’s free to roam and place more pee pads out. When Joey was a puppy, there was always a pee pad close by. He just wouldn’t seek them out to much older.

Has she had bloodwork done? Maybe that would be good to do.. Bloodwork would show an infection-

Did you have a previous pet in the house that may have left odors that stimulate her to pee?

I know boys dogs like to "mark" and see my neighbor's boy try to pee on so many things during a walk. I have noticed that sometimes my girl will do what I think is marking as well. When I walk her she will do her first initial, normal size pee. Sometimes during the walk she will stop and smell something for a while and then do a little squat. I can tell that hardly any comes out, plus I know she is "empty" from the pee when we first started the walk.

Could your little one be marking? Maybe somewhere she was trained to pee immediately after drinking, such that she associates water with pee? If she was doing this since you got her it really could be a training thing. Maybe she had brothers who taught her about marking.

Double checking the UTI is a good idea also.

Nancy this is what I am thinking. When she is in her xpen she always goes on her potty pad. I did not know that urine production slowed down at night...that is interesting. I will make sure when she is out of her x pen we leave out more pee pads and watch her more carefully.

I have a male dog...he however, does not mark. I am wondering if she is a little "marker". We are going to wait another month to have her spayed because she is so tiny. I am wondering if that would help?

We had her tested for a UTI and it came back negative. I can ask the vet to again. When I spoke to the vet she said that because Piper is so little her bladder is tiny and because she is young it is in the developing stages.

Also, it's important to get every little spot out and you need an enzyme cleaner to do this. If even a tiny bit of the protein remains a dog is compelled to mark the spot again. Enzyme cleaners actually contain bacteria that “eat” the protein, and this insures complete removal, but it can take time and several applications. Do you have carpet or some other surface? If you have carpet, it might be a good idea to use a "black" light to see the spots, some cleaners take away the odor, but still leave the protein. Joey was much easier to train on the wood floors and he would seek out a pad better than in the carpeted areas of the house.

On having her tested, didn't you say she had just got finished with antibiotics? If that was the case of course it would come up negative.
When she potty's on the floor are you able to syringe some up and take that to the Vet and have it tested?

We use natures miracle. Is there a better cleaner to be using? We have wood floors for the most part so it is definitely much easier to spot the puddles and clean them!

Maggie's "marking" if that's what she does sometimes, started after her spay. She was spayed at about 9 months old and probably started this marking stuff after a year old. I don't remember her doing it before that.

How is your baby doing? Did you get her tested for a UTI again? Hoping all is well!

My Bella did the same thing. I went through the testing for UTI and there was also nothing. The vet said her bladder muscles were not fully developed. She is almost two now and she has stopped with the little puddles finally. I remember last year writing on here the same thing as you. I was trying to get her potty trained for outside and I am sure I took her out 20 times a day. Like you said she would drink and immediately want to go out. She also drank more water when we were in Florida because of the weather and therefor had to go potty more. Now she is pretty good. Would I say she is 100% potty trained....yes if I am paying close attention to her and I see her potty dance....no if I am preoccupied with something else. With her I find she is great all day but from 5 to 8 at night it is play time and I find she goes more often then. I have to sometime get up with her in the night to go potty but I think that is because we may have been out and she ate or drank too much too late in the evening. Good luck with your little one. She is still young and these little Yorkies come with their own set of rules....but they are worth it:)
