Vomited blood

Yorkie talk family, please keep Furgie in your thoughts and prayers...woke up tonight to I think the sound of her throwing up and subconsiously realizing she hadn't been next to me it bed for a little while. Saw a good amount of bloody red vomit, rushed her to the emergency vet. They are doing blood work and tests, will be giving her IV fluids, hope to know more in a little bit. She is 1 year and 8 months old...has only been away from me one night... :(

Just got a phone call...so far blood work is looking okay and no obstruction showing up on the xray...they are suspecting hemorrhagic gastroenteritis Bloody Diarrhea - Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis (HGE) in Dogs... they want to make sure she doesn't throw up in the next 12 hours so hopefully she'll be home by the afternoon!

Loving Furgie 03-09-2012 08:27 AM

Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes...it means so much! I can't remember the last time my eyes were so swollen from crying so much! Well she hasn't thrown up again and no diarrhea. They are giving her iv fluids, antibiotic, anti nausea medicine and antacids. They want to rest her stomach, not let her eat for a while and then slowly reintroduce food and make sure she can hold it down. Said they want to keep her till tomorrow afternoon... :( The said we could visit, but they said she was a little upset when I left last night that she kept looking around :( I don't think it is a good idea we visit cause I think it would stress her out even more when she wouldn't be able to come home with us. I asked the lady who gave me my financial update if she is able to go back and see the dogs, she said yes...so I asked if she could go back and hold Furgie and snuggle with her, that Furgie is just a sweet love...she said she would

chachi 03-09-2012 08:33 AM

Im praying for Furgie that her condition improves and she gets to come home soon

I just checked your post out, glad your baby is home and is okay! The vomit and diarrhea she had, was it straight blood or some blood in it? Furgie appears to only have had one episode of vomiting, but it was a good amount and appeared to be all blood. I dropped her off at 2am early this morning, they want to keep her till tomorrow afternoon. It looked like your little one was just there all day? Everything has been okay since? There was a blood count level that I guess is very concentrated with the HAE that Furgies was concentrated, but not too bad...so the night vet said she is not completely sure that it is HAE, but either way, I just want her to get the treatment needed and just be better! So tired and stressed!!!! I had never heard of the HAE but from what I have researched so far time is of essence....

ladyjane 03-09-2012 08:48 AM

Prayers for Furgie! :) Thank God you got her in quickly. HGE is scary.

Oh, we all knew what you meant! I am sure that you are exhausted. They always do this stuff to us at night!...usually on weekends, too!

The vomit had blood in it and her diarrhea was a lot of blood, that was what scared me. Allie's blood work was ok, nothing too high that concerned them. She was just there for the day.
I did have to give her med's at home for about a week and had to eat the RX Hill's I/D.
I just got back from the Vet with her, today was her yearly physical and she did so good.I can't believe that it has been almost a year since we adopted her.

I'm praying for your little Furgie. My Gina had this and unfortunately she passed away after 5 days in the hospital. I did not recognize the early symptoms (several months before) so it was quite advanced when I took her in. So sorry your baby is suffering from this. I understand why you don't want to visit - we felt the same way. It would be too upsetting to her to visit and then leave her there.
Please keep us informed on little Furgie.

Thank you so much for your prayers, I am so deeply sorry about your little Gina. What were the early symptoms that Gina experienced? In September Furgie had some GI issues that led to aspiration...it was horrible, but they considered it maybe colitis...she had a stool that had some mucus and looked like she was straining. She had a couple episodes where she vomited clear stuff. Took her to the vet, they told me to give her some pepto bisthmul via syringe they sent me home with. It was a struggle to give it to her cause she fought me, well I think she aspirated the pepto bisthmul cause that night she woke me up with her breathing...scary...went to vet first thing in am...they took an xray and said she aspirated, she was given a shot of steroids and antibiotics...then improved....the original problem was the clear vomit...this never happened again. Fine since all that... Then last night it was just kind of random, she was her fine normal self last night. I just called and checked on her and they said she still has not vomited since and is being her sweet playful self! Thank goodness!

Gina started getting very picky about food. Not eating. I kept changing her food trying to find something she liked. Her stools were dark and I just assumed it was the food but actually it was blood. She threw up at night - yellow bile type stuff. Once she was outside and fell over. I called the emergency vet and they didn't think it was anything. Right!! She had a total physical/blood work done in Nov and she was extremely fit for being 11 years old. She died in Feb.

Thank you for sharing, it is important to hear what other people have experienced and to just try to be aware to the best of our ability.

Ugh...finally cleaning and getting house work done found 2 big spots on the foot of my comforter that she threw up on :( Sometimes I have a hard time sleeping and will take ambien to help sleep and it knocks me out! Thank god I didn't take it last night!!!! Can't wait for her to be home, normal, and healthy

Sending prayers that she will be fine. Try to rest when you can.

Thank you! I am going to try to go to bed early tonight! Does anyone know...there is a mesquite tree in my back yard, when cleaning up Furgies poop, I notice there are mesquite needles in her poop, so obviously she eats the needles, she doesn't digest it, and its in her poop...could she have a whole bunch of needles in her stomach or intestines that didn't pass and might have led to this? It wouldn't show up on the xray....thinking back last night and within the week her bowel sounds were soooo loud.... and her stool sometimes is mucusy, sometimes firm, sometimes diarrhea...these things never seem to happen enough that I had real concerns......I just wonder if maybe I should have???..... The vet is supposed to be calling me at 6pm Arizona time with an update and I am going to ask her all these questions....Just want to try my hardest to ever prevent this again....

ladyjane 03-09-2012 05:08 PM

I had a pup bleed like yours in the middle of the night once and he was admitted overnight...the next day he was fine. His labs did not indicate HGE....the vet said he probably ate a blade of grass (yes, a blade of grass can cut their intestines). I knew that was not it because I was always outside with him. Well, one day I figured it out....Maxwell used to sit and wait for my bird to toss sunflower seeds out of his cage...and he would eat them. I knew then that was what cut him. So...yes, it may be those needles!

I had mentioned the tree and other observations to the vet and she was just like...it could have contributed but she didn't get excited by it.... but...I am on my way to go pick up Furgie!!! She did good through the night, ate like a champ and held everything down! The vet said she has to be on a bland diet for a week, she'll be taking pepcid and she is sending home an anti nausea medicine......and my schedule changes each week at work....just so happens I have off till Wed...so glad this way I can watch over my little babe! :)

ladyjane 03-10-2012 07:40 AM

Yay! So happy to hear that she is coming home! :) How wonderful that you will be there with her! :)

Cherie6446 03-10-2012 08:44 AM

I am so glad to hear that little Furgie is coming home. I think those needles you were talking about could certainly be the cause of her bleeding. Take care of yourself and your little girl. It is great that you will be home for the next 5 days.
