Broken leg :( Hello so max is 2.5 lbs and only 5 months last week fell down the steps. He knows how to go up steps but not down and last week when he tried and failed he broke his left back leg. I took him to the vet and the hospital and he got surgery two days later. He got two pins in his little leg and his staples. The doctor said to let him walk and be normal just no jumping and NO STEPS because he needed to learn to put weight on his bad leg . However its now been a week and max Wont put any weight on it I'm worried that he might never walk like normal again. Any advice? Or thoughts on what I can or should do to help him ? |
I don't think you should worry. I would call the ortho who did the surgery and ask. Better yet make an appointment with them and discuss it, perhaps they can show you some exercises to do with your pup or even send him to pt? I really think it wil resolve. My mini had major surgery on leg and hip before she was 1 yrs old too and I thought the same, she did fine...when she was ready! Good luck! P.s. If he seems to be in pain please don't wait to call or go to vet.:) |
I can't tell you not to worry, we worry regardless, my Prada fell down the steps at 15 weeks of age, and it was horrible, two pins and one LONG surgery performed by a great orthopedic vet, she is now 3 and suffers from Reumathoid arthritis, she not on pain meds yet but the vet told me that if she gets worse she might want to put her on a pain killer I am giving her homeopatic remedies and so far she only slows down a bit in stormy days other than that she acts normal. I would ask your doctor , i remember calling the surgeon about 4 times while Prada had the staples on.. Prada refused to put weight on her leg and now she limps, my vet said it would get better but it never did, he said is on her head..:P...LOL sending prayers for your boy.... here's a picture of my girl.. http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p...cture009-4.jpg gentle hugs for you both... Thanks so much for your advise I don't think he is in pain he wants to run and play and be normal but only on three legs we have to hold him and make sure to not let him hop everywhere. I hope he starts walking fine and goes back to normal :( I don't want him in pain and I want him healed but I guess as long as he is okay I am thankful.. This is max before the fall http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...9/ec56ee82.jpg now his legs are shaved and he is a little dirty hahaha because I can't bathe him for a month :( |
My baby didn't fall down the steps but my hubby did! He was carrying her down to bed and slipped on one of her toys on the steps. He went sliding/tumbling all the way to the bottom but was able to safely put her down as he began to fall. The sound was terrible and my first thought was not if hubby was ok, but whether he had fallen on Maggie!:D He was sore for a while, but I don't think anything hurt for long. Moral? Always make sure the toys are off the steps! I hope your baby feels better soon. I dread the day my girl should needs surgery because she is a bundle of running and jumping up and down from furniture. I don't know how we would handle the restrictions. I'm afraid her activity will lead to bad knees. Luckily she is 9.5 pounds, so I think she is big enough for jumping on and off sofa safely. At least your baby is young enough that the habits of jumping on and off furniture are probably not as set, and you should be able to train her to stay down. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon! |

If it is the femur he broke, a pin usually will not fix it. Did you go to a board certified surgeon? If not, I suggest you find one and let them take a look. Check your receipt...if it is an IM pin, they usually will not work because the bone twists around it and healing cannot occur. Usually a plate is needed to stablilize it. |
Oh i am so sorry your poor little baby got hurt. I will say a prayer for him hoping he heals quickly.. A hug for you.... |
little joey has broken his leg too I hope little Max is back on his feet now (all four) My little boy has jumped off the last step and his front leg has buckled under him. He is at the hospital having Xrays now and we are waiting to hear what type of break it is. I am terrified and reading about little ones who this has happened to and recovered is easing my fears. |
Max is on all fours and doing very well he is back to his playful loving self and I have to say I was shocked he has such a small skinny leg but everything is fine. He broke his leg around his growth plate so we were very scared that he would have a smaller leg but he is doing very well and all four legs are the same length. I hope your little one is okay I know how awful it feels to not be able to help but max recovered very good so I hope your pup does too |
That is such good news! I am trying to stay positive and hope goes well for us too. |
