Bleeding after spaying I need someone to put my mind at ease or inform me please. My girl has had to healthy litters. She is 2 1/2 years old. Her last litter was not planned...I decided to not put her through the stress of a second litter and I had my male neutered because she came into heat early. However, he was still fertile after his operation and my boyfriend promised to watch her while I went to have a shower and I got out to find them tied. Needless to say she fell pregnant and had 3 beautiful puppies. She suffered Eclampsia though and I ended up hand rearing the puppies. Her heats seemed to get closer and closer every time so after the last puppy went to her new home I decided to have her spayed asap to avoid any undue stress on her. She was spayed a week ago and started to bleed from her vagina last night. I wasnt entirely sure it was f rom her though because in the morning there was blood on the bed but she didnt seem to be bleeding and is not swollen at all. My mom just called to say she is now bleeding very heavily and I should call the vet. He has told me to rush in as soon as possible. Im in a blind panic :( Has this happened to anyone else? And if so what was the reason? |
I haven't had that happen with my girls. If she's bleeding as heavily as your mom says, you need to get her in to the vet now. Please let us know what the doctor says and how she's doing. Sending prayers your little girl is all well soon. Bonny |
I surely hope that you are on the way to the vet. |
If she is bleeding Heavily now as you say.Get off the computer and get this girl to Vet ASAP. (sigh !) |
The earliest they can see me is in an hour - im at the office and leaving now. I will update in the morning when I know what is causing this. She is eating just fine and in good spirits though. Thanks for the support |
I cannot imagine that a vet would make someone wait for an appointment for a pup that is bleeding. Sounds like an emergency to me....not something to make an appt for! |
I agree LadyJane !! That is nuts to me. I don't think I would even call I would just show up at the vets office. One time Gilmore was breathing kind of weird. I wasn't going to take any chances so I just went asap to the vet and told them I was freaked out thinking what if he stopped breathing. They took me right away. No way was I going to wait and first call the office. |

Hope all is well. How scary |
sending prayers for this poor girl, sometimes my head hurts after reading this posts, I would be at the vet's door at the first sign of anything wrong that involves Blood.. so sad.. hugs, |
According to the time of the OP's post, my guess is that her vet was not open yet & is the reason for the waite. I hope the pup is OK & at the vet now. Praying for a good update soon. |
OMG! I am so glad my vet does not make appt's for visits only for surgery. Triage and then 1st come 1st served. AND we have a ER vet within 15 minutes of home. I would be a wreck with a little gal bleeding heavily and not able to see a vet ASAP!! |
Just checking in to see how your girl is doing. I hope everything's ok. |
Praying that everything went well at the vet today. |
Hi all I got my little girl to the vet, I was early and he saw me straight away. He checked her out for tickbite fever in case because it is our summer and my doggies are often in the grass. She was clear. She is in good spirits and eating and drinking and behaving normally so he said he just wanted to rule it out in case. He says she has some kind of infection which is causing bleeding in her urine and says it is not related to her having just been spayed. He says it could be that she has got an infection via her vagina that has traveled up into her urinary tract and is causing the bleeding. He says it is by no means life threatening and that it should clear up quickly. If not then of course further testing will be done. He has put her on a good strong antibiotic and has insisted she comes back in next week even if she has pulled all her stitches out so he can take a swab and see that the infection is clear. She has managed to take 2 of the 4 stitches so far but the vet says she is nicely healed and the wound won't open up. Im so glad she is ok. Im praying it clears up soon. Thanks for all the wishes, I needed the support |
That's wonderful news. So glad she's going to be ok. :) |
so glad all is going to be good with your baby!! |
so glad she is on the mend.. hugs, |
Thank you for the update. I am so happy to hear she's OK. |
Thank you so much for the update I was worried about your girl. Im glad its just an infection and not from the spay |
Thanks for the update! I'm glad to hear you made it to the vet and she is on antibiotics :) |
I too am relieved to hear she is on the road to recovery. Just a question though, did the vet ever mention Stump Pyrometra? It is relatively a rare occurence in spayed bitches, but can happen. I'm assuming there was no fever associated with the bleeding? |
