Need an opinion what could be wrong please!
 

Good morning
I am brand new to this site (just registered) but had been lurking in the background. Because I am stumped thought I would get some feedback on possible problem and if anyone else experienced anything similar. Even my vet is stumped and he loves Skippy dearly.
On Feb 4th I took Skippy for his yearly visit and to update his shots.All he needed to update was his DHL-PPvCv and Bordetella shots. We also determined he needed more dental work...Last year he had 4 extractions and everything went fine. Because the visit was on a Sat. I let Skippy stay with Doc and his wife...They treat skip like family and takes him home with them. Everything was fine. On Mon Feb 6th he had his dental work (5 more extractions) and we decided to give him his vaccinations while he was relaxed and sleepy.
Skippy has been having problems since and Doc has run every test under the rainbow and everything is coming back negative and last night really scared me.

There are no infections, blockages or stones but Skippy will take a couple of steps (male) and not lift his leg for peeing but instead in squatting and only dribbles and twitches. He continues just standing there and tries to dribble more but again no infections. Last night I watched to see if he would start walking but instead he slowly squatted to almost laying down then fell over to his side and could not get up. I want my OLD SKIPPY BACK!

Don't know if it helps but he was anesthetized using Ketamine and Domitor and was apparently an intravenous injection. He also received a gas called Isoflurane.

Doc has been fantastic and I trust this man. While trying to figure out what could be wrong, I am not being charged because they knew his actions and personality before the teeth extractions. Doc wants to try one other procedure and run a cathather to his bladder with a dye but last time he ran a cath without the dye it ran smoothly.

Sorry this post is long for a newbie but we seem to be out of options. Could something had happened while he was under the anesthesia?

Anyone take an xray of the dog's bladder? Ultrasound?
If Doc can't figure it out, take doggie to a board certified internal medicine specialist. You can find one at www.acvim.org and look for internal medicine in your area.

Tough one.

An ultrasound was done then to rule out stones (not all are visible on X-ray)?

Urinalysis and culture are perfectly normal?

Does he ever pee normally?

Bloodwork normal?

Time for a specialist..

Ultrasound, Urinalysis and Culture all normal. When we first get up in the morning he will hike his leg at nearest tree but stands there, dribbles and stands there until I remove him. Again, the whole time at tree leg is hiked.
Also, His bloodwork is all normal. Sometime today or tommorrow he will have the cath with the dye done to verify no blockage.

That's an awful lot of vaccines and a procedure in two days.... I would get a neuro consult asap as well. Lepto vac is recommended to be given separately, vaccines separate from surgeries/procedures, and Corona only affects very young puppies.

Thought if anyone who might be knowledgeable would understand what these test results read. One thing left for doc to try (and medicine arrives on Monday) is suppose to be something to relax his uretha. Doc thinks he might be tensing up with trying to pee. The day after he received these results he ran another cath (larger) and did a saline flush with nothing showing up this time but skippy is still having his issues. Feedback would be extremely appreciated at this point. Below are the lab results:

History Skippy has been straining to urinate every since a dental procedure. A struvite stone was found in
the hair around the penis the day after the dental procedure.
Findings
2 lateral survey radiographs are available along with 11 orthogonal retrograde cystourethrogram radiographs.



There is no evidence of liver, splenic or renal enlargement. The gastrointestinal structures are within normal
limits for size and content. The urinary bladder is moderately distended. There is a questionable faint pinpoint
mineral opacity on the lateral projection over the plane of the bladder. There is no evidence of a urethrolith.



A retrograde cystourethrogram was performed with a catheter in the distal penile urethra. 2 filling defects are
noted in the mid membranous urethra on initial radiographs. This is not identified on subsequent images.
There is no evidence of a urethral stricture or abnormal luminal attenuation. The urinary bladder is
moderately distended with contrast. Complete urinary bladder distention is not identified. Minimal
extravasation into the prostate is identified. Filling defects are not identified within the urinary bladder.
Conclusions
Initial urethral filling defects may represent gas bubbles; however, small ureteroliths cannot be ruled out.
These are not seen on subsequent images and may have been pushed into urinary bladder.



Small mineral opacity over plane of urinary bladder may represent small cystic calculus. Intermittent
movement of cystic calculi into urethra is a consideration.



Otherwise normal retrograde cystourethrogram.

I personally have nothing for you, all I can say is I don't believe this report indicates 100% no problems...although it doesn't seem to indicate any serious issues either. Good Luck

I have no experience but maybe a specialist would be able to help. I hope Skippy feels better soon.

I have no idea but a wild guess would be too many chemicals all together at once... may have bothered his liver.. but just a guess.. Sorry for your baby's bad condition....

I was talking this over with my husband.. I do not want to frighten you but you may want to consider thinking of the dangers of the anesthetics ... you said he was anesthetized using Ketamine and Domitor and was apparently an intravenous injection. He also received a gas called Isoflurane. That seems a bit if not way too much in addition to the shots... we all know the dangers of anesthetics to the brain...
Again not to frighten you but just a thought to consider....

In my best unprofessional interpetation: Sounds like his 'plumbing' is fine, but they saw evidence of some kind of calculi or stone, coming from the kidney to the bladder (ureter), and then in the bladder. So he may have kidney stones, and the stones may be intermittantly getting stuck in his urethra (tube that pee follows from the bladder to the outside).


Just me: Infections are usually present with stones, so this could be why he keeps trying to pee. Is he on Antibiotics?

Doc on Wed after the cath was performed gave him a injection of an antibotic which lasts for 2 weeks. I sure am hoping that nothing happened to him under the anesthesia. Right now when he is in the house I am keeping him in a "belly band" with a sanitary napkin. He so hates that. All he does is lay there because when he starts walking he has the urge to pee.
I am feeling so helpless because when we go for our walks he walks about ten steps before "squatting" and looks up at me as though saying "help me". I feel so bad that I can't help.
I will pick him up and just the pressure of picking him up he's dribbling urine. I am so lost.

KJC - yes, Skippy is on an antibotic. When doc ran the last Cath on Wed. he gave him a injectable one that is suppose to last for 2 weeks. There is a medicine on order that should be in on Monday and it is suppose to relax the uretha. Doc seems to think that he is now tensing up and thinking if he can relax it that could be the solution. Great...more meds for my baby. I am hesitant to give him any more and since doc is stumpted that is what he wants to try next.

If my vet were that stumped, she would refer me to a specialist.
