Panting, Shaking, Staggering Zipper, my 13 year old Toy Fox Terrier, spent about 3 days last weekend vomiting and having diarrhea, and so did my Yorkie and my dad's Yorkie. I took them to the vet who said it was a food change (which I don't believe) and my dad took his Yorkie to his vet who said it was a bacterial infection and to give yogurt and probiotics. She was fine for the rest of the week, until today she refused to eat dinner, was shaking all day, and just now started panting. It is not too cold or too hot in the house, my other two dogs have run around for about an hour now and are not panting. So I know this is not caused by temperature. Right after she started panting, she got up and staggered a little while walking. I guess what I'm asking is, do you think I need to rush her to the emergency vet or can I wait until Monday? I don't know why dogs always have to get sick when the regular vet is closed. |
Well, am a vet tech, and i know if someone called our clinic with these symptoms, we would say bring it right down. I think monday is too long to wait personally. The staggering is what would worry me the most |
Emergency room, fast. |
I agree. I would be at the ER vet right away. Good luck. |
Now she has stopped the panting and staggering and started eating again. She seems to have gotten somewhat better. |
Still shouldnt wait till monday, obviously something is wrong, and you need to find out what. |
Panting and shaking can be signs of pain, staggering is not good. I wouldn't wait until Monday. Sending prayers for your little one. |
I hope she is ok. I always err on the side of caution and take mine in with those type of symptoms. Is it Zipper who is sick? Due to her age I would definitely get her in now. I will keep positive thoughts for her and you. |
After $350 at the vet, the diagnosis seems to be "perplexed". The vet kept saying he was perplexed, ran every test he could think of, and she came back negative for just about everything. She has inflammation in her lungs, but nothing else that shows up in tests. The inflammation in her lungs suggests chronic bronchitis, except she never coughs. At one point they suspected heart disease, but she has no heart murmur and didn't respond to a medicine used to treat heart disease. Apparently Zipper has decided to make up a new disease for herself! They gave her antibiotics and pain meds and sent her home after giving up on diagnosing her. At least she is eating now, although she only eats if I put shredded chicken on top of her kibble. |
Well that sounds stressful for you. I sure hope they figure out what it is. Inflamation in the lungs sure isnt good. Did they have anything to say about the staggering? |
I am confused as well. They gave her a medicine for a cardiac problem to rule out illness? What medication was that and when? Did your vet perhaps suggest a specialist? I would be a bit concerned that they don't know what is going on in her lungs. |

I hope she is feeling better soon. |
Is there a possibility the dogs could have gotten into some moldy food ? |
I hope your baby is ok. Our little Lolita displayed those same symptoms for 3 weeks before she passed and it was heart disease. I will be praying for your little one. |
