Something is just not right with our Jasmine - Please Help! Long story short we went away 2 weeks ago, left the dog with a relative who has other animals (couple cats and a Chi) - First time we ever left her for more than 24 hrs (this was for 4 nights) Came back and the next couple of days she started with hiding under the bed, in the corner of the bathroom, etc. Fri comes along and she is vomiting (more than 6x in less than 24hrs) we took her to the vet and they did xrays etc. and found nothing more than anxiety - she was put on a culture gel for her stomach, and we were given composure to help with anxiety - now 2 weeks later - no more throwing up, back to her normal self except she still hides for no apparent reason all the time! She is eating normally, drinking normally, and we took her recently to a friends with another dog and they somewhat played and she was normal but at our place she hides from us - Tonight (following the visit to a friends house with her in which we came home extremely late) she has slept all day and hasn't eaten anything all day (except for a treat we gave her) and is hiding again - when taken out of her bed when she isnt hiding she shivers immed. What could be wrong??? PS- it seems the composure isnt working but we have been inconsistent with the dosing - |
Oh that is worrisome. Perhaps she is just worried you are going to take her someplace and leave her again(?) Has she been checked over completely by her vet? Possible timing was a coinsidence and it had nothing to do with her "visit". Sorry can't be more help, but best wishes! |
Did the vet or anyone check her anal glands? If they are fine, I think I'd get a 2nd opinion.... |

As for the Vet they checked her pretty thoroughly, nothing to report - |

Most times the glands work fine and empty with a BM, but changes in diet can affect how well the system works. |
Wow sound like you baby has had a bit of abandonment issues. Normally dogs will hide and shiver for fear of something. But from what you say there are no triggers in your home. If nothing else just cuddle and love on her and show her a bit or a lot of additional comfort. It may just be that the leaving her was a bit too much for her to handle. |
Thats good to know thanks! I think though since she is having normal BM's everything is ok there? We could bring her back but the Vet said that she is experiencing what seems like bad anxiety esp. since she licks everything (normal though since she was a puppy - she is a licker!) but the vet and I noticed she also does this gagging reflex when nervous - Could it be depression/anxiety where she needs a companion? Or is worried to the point of depression/anxiety that we will abandon her again every minute? We have been home with her and she hides which makes it very strange - Before all this happen we did notice something new, we had company over and everyone was very loud, she began hiding around that time but it stopped after the company left, and she was fine - i feel terrible that we cant snap her out of it ! |
Saying prayers for your Jasmine! |
Shivering and hiding are not normal behaviors. If some extra reassurance doesn't help the situation quickly, I would go back to the Vet. Both can indicate pain or illness. |
She finally came out we gave her some attention and she digs it but than goes right into her bed (in defending her energy levels have a long day/night last night that was very new to her - environment, people and dog) hence the low levels of energy but she hasnt eaten - she did however eat last night a few times though - Just very weird behavior from what we are used to - i honestly think she maybe depressed :( |
My girl has anxiety issues also and trembles at every new situation. I don't make it a big deal. I started by carrying her and progress to where she would just cuddle herself next to me. Now I just pat her and say it's ok. She trembles for a little bit and then comes out of it. But I do try and leave her with trusting friends when possible. I don't think she will ever stop trembling but I know she's ok. |
Funny thing is she just went out, normal BM and watch me lock the door for the night, she immed. ran to her bowl starting eating and is now playing with her toy! LOL weird - |
Normal BM does not mean there is no anal gland issue. I would have that checked out for sure. Also check her bum to see if there is any poo stuck to it as that will sometimes stress them out as well. |
I could be dead wrong, but it sounds to me like she is just upset. If you had never left her for that long, she is probably just worried. Maybe it will just take some time for her to relax. Hope that is all it is.... |

Anyway wanted to give everyone an update - its been about a week since she has been acting weird but feeling alot better - we brought her to a friends house i think i mentioned and she was curious the entire night but very territorial over us as owners and anyone who tried to pet the other dog and not her  A couple days later we invested in a solid NylaBone for powerful chewers since we got rid of all her toys since we thought maybe she ingested something from her tennis ball or other furry things we let her play with - Since we introduced her to that she has dramatically improved, not hiding really anymore, constantly chewing on the bone, brings it everywhere she goes including greetings at the door and with her outside and back in - its like she needed something to keep her busy very interesting - but so far all is well and that may have done the trick - or she is back to feeling confident we are not leaving her again ;) Thanks for everyones concern! :aimeeyork |
