Question about Vet Costs You guys know that Lucy is getting ready to have her bladder stone surgery; she's at the Vet today to have blood work done and re-do her bile acids. So, no matter what, I would not be making any Vet changes right away. But I also don't want to feel like I'm being taken advantage of. So I'm just going to see if we can compare notes - last week we went in for a physical exam of her back leg; 2 x rays of same; a few Rimadyl pills cut into fourths; and also got Ringo's fish oil supplement for his food. Total cost $260 - does everyone think this is fairly reasonable? We just moved here about a a year ago and I find prices are $$$$$ compared to my old state. Lucy will be at the Vet today for bloodwork and the bile acid testing. Total cost - about $250. When we had bile acids done back home - total cost was about $100 but I know the pre-surgery blood tests cost too. This vet has a brand spanking new office - and really not that many customers that I can see. I will feel better if I hear that he is not overcharging me. I never walk out of his office (with either Lucy or Ringo) for less than $200. |

Recently took my Yorkie in for exam, 2 xrays, some pills cut into fourths; no fish oil supplement! cost was $270. (Fish Oil Supplements - can be purchased from your local drugstore, Walmart etc., - probably much cheaper-they don't have to be high end doggy product.) I have alot of experience with vets and have now found one that I love. What I have found is that where one is cheaper on somethings they make up for it on other things...so competitive wise I think that you'll find that most vets in your area end up being in the same ball park! Make some calls, most places wouldn't hesitate to give you charges over the phone! Warning: Please be wary of any place that is overly cheap! Check online for reviews, BBB, Vets Assoc. etc..always do your homework! Good Luck! |
That sounds pretty reasonable to me, I do think you can buy fish oil supplements elsewhere and save, and probably most medications. Vet prices will vary by state. Some vets have to pay more for their office space as well as more to their staff in different states. |
Well thanks that makes me feel better! He has me convinced that human fish oil is higher in Omega 3's instead of Omega 6's (or vice versa) which is why we need the high end doggy product. I'll check into it but at least I know his costs aren't WAAY out there. |
Sounds pretty much in line to me... :D |

I don't know where you live. But there is a wide range of cost here... like someone posted before I don't go to the "cheapest" but don't want to pay for new office space either!!! I think it sounds a little high.. break it down. How much is the office visit? Can you get the meds online? etc etc I am like you.. if it is needed so be it. I just left a vet because the last two times I though I was going in for a $45.00 check up and when I checked out the bills was $400.00:eek: He gave shots and treatments that I did not approve and in my opinion was not needed. At least I should have been asked, I could have scheduled the treatments for example. They also made an error in a test.. their error and I had to bring sammy back in and they charged me!! I complained and walked out. I talked to a few others and found he has been doing that to other people also. good luck |

Sounds right to me. :) It really can add up. |
As everyone has said, you can save alot by purchasing your fish oil supplements elsewhere. For example, see this: Amazon.com: Grizzly Salmon Oil All-Natural Dog... I, personally, feed the real deal instead of supplementing. So I will feed canned sardines in water (lowest sodium content that I can find) weekly. For a kibble-fed dog, you can just add a teaspoon / tablespoon (depending upon weight of dog) to their food daily. Either, or a combo of both, will work and will save money. |
Pricing sounds fair to me. |
The prices sound like what they would be in my area. In the city, they would be double. Although, I just learned that a single dental xray is $99 here. What if 3 images are needed? Ouch. |
