Thought doggy diarrhea was a thing of the past :( Sophia had some really bad diarrhea over a month ago. The only thing that would help it was antibiotics. We changed her food from taste of the wild bison and venison to blue buffalo basics turkey and potato. We also started feeding her pumpkin again. Soon enough, her stool was solid! yay! It stayed that way for about a month. We did notice some increased itching, though. Two nights ago she had diarrhea for one bowel movement, and then it was normal again. Tonight, she just had another bout of diarrhea (the urgent kind where she jumps of the bed and can't even make it to the door :() I was wondering if she could possibly be a food allergy? Could symptoms be intermittent like this? She's been on the new food for about a month! Any suggestions would be incredibly helpful. Thanks! |
It really all depends. For the most part my dog's bowls are solid. But sometimes, they are soft. Did she get into something? Last time she was at the doctor, what did he say? If the diarrhea is that bad she may be sick again. See how often it happens this round before going back to the doc. Also, I find that stools are harder when I feed hard food. Good luck! |
Could she have been given a treat or ate something you missed? Mine don't have issues unless someone gives them something they aren't used to and that can give them soft stools...or...if they eat something out in the yard that I didn't see. Have you had a stool sample checked at the vet to make sure there is nothing else going on? |
Urgent diarrhea doesn't sound like a food allergy to me. I can probably only remember two times in Jackson's 3 years of life where he's had diarrhea (once when he got into Beneful and the other after eating a LOT of fatty human food). I wouldn't say it's normal to be happening so often. Has she been tested for anything like IBD or pancreatitis? Be careful with the diarrhea because they can dehydrate quickly. |
All good suggestions. I think her stomachs really sensitive so we try not to give her very many treats. I didn't see her get into anything. Last time we were at the vet she wanted to give her a fourth round of antibiotics and thats when I said no and just took her home and decided to give the canned pumpkin a shot. The vet already has done blood work and stool samples. Everything has been normal. She hasn't been tested for IBD yet, but I'm thinking that she should be. This morning her stool was solid, like normal. |
That's good to hear that they were back to normal. Just feed her a consistent diet. |
