Really not an emergency??? Please- need opinions. My 11.5 month old pure-bred male Yorkie had tinge of blood & mucus in his stool. I called his vets' hotline and they say to just watch for any change. Someone gave him a few bites of chicken breast last couple of days as a treat. He is used to dry diet with occassional plain yoghurt as a flavoring. Could that have caused the symptoms? He is neutered, has had a tooth pulled, & up to date on innoculations & heartworm meds. Should I worry & do something else right now? Is vet tech right - should I just wait and watch???? |
A tinge of blood in the stool can be caused from parasites, and/or digestive upset which can make the lining of the intestines bleed slightly and become inflamed. Usually a bland diet will help it to heal with 3-4 days, and antibiotics are sometimes prescribed. Wait and watch, if the amount of blood you're seeing increases the take him in, as long as he is acting normally in all other aspects. |

I agree, a tinge of blood doesn't require an ER visit. Max had it once and and I think it was an intestinal irritation. |
Holly had this right after we got her. I freaked and took her to the ER. They just gave her a special food and it cleared up. |
You were right It looks good so far. No BM yet but also no blood. Liberty has lots of energy and has been bringing me his tug-o'war monkey to entice ne to play. ;-). I think it is as you say - maybe he got irritated from the "non-authorized" treat sneaks! Watch out for well meaning elves who fall for your baby's big baby browns and slip treats! It can scare the life out of you!! I'll still watch for any changes. Thanks so much, all! |
Glad he's doing better! |
Good to hear he's doing better. |
Glad to hear your little one is doing better.:) My Jada is allergic to chicken and the symptoms present as itching and once she had the mucus and a tinge of blood in her poops. I always thought the allergies presented as itching, but it can cause digestive tract irritation too. :( |
Normalish. A tiny bit is a vet check if recurrent not an ER visit unless we're talking a person or continual large amount. |
