Chewie's reaction to last set of vaccinations.
 

Today my little one had his last set of vaccinations, his 2nd booster and Lepto. He was fine for about an hour or two after the shots, with the exception of car sickness, which is another obstacle we are trying to overcome. He took a nap, which was expected, as he has gotten tired after his other sets- but when he woke up he was extremely sore and would shriek if he was held or touched around his injection spots. After a while, he would barely walk- not even tempted to walk to his favorite treat. We called the clinic that he has had all of his shots done at and drove him back, where he got carsick again, and the vet gave him a shot of cortisone. He seems to be feeling a teeny bit better now, but he got sick for a third time on the way home. Today has been a nightmare! I hate seeing my baby feel like this. I've seen other threads about extreme pain after vaccinations..but has anyone had any luck with the cortisone/steroid helping afterwards? Luckily this is his last set and we won't have to think about this again for another year.:(

Im wondering if it is the lepto that made it worse, Im in wa state dont give that one. The coritsone will make them urinate more. I have heard that ginger snaps can help car sickness, hope he is better soon

I too am wondering if it is the Lepto shot.

My late Lizzie when she was a puppy we almost lost her due to the Lepto shot. It took her almost a week to recover. So none of mine get that shot now.

Sorry this has happened.... most vets nowadays know better than to give small dogs multiple vaccines in one visit. Vaccines are strong and Yorkies are little. One shot at a time separated by 4 weeks. One can overload a Yorkie's immune system by doing too much at one time.

Vaccines can seem confusing, but it is one of the most important aspects of protecting your pet's health. While it is important not to under-vaccinate, it is just as important not to over-vaccinate - both scenarios could be dangerous to your dog's health.

In 2003, and again in 2006, The AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) released its new recommendations for the Canine Vaccine Schedule. Unfortunately, all vets still do not follow these recommendations - so it is up to the pet's owner to be sure an appropriate and safe vaccine schedule is being followed.

CORE Vaccines for a canine (should be given to all dogs, unless a medical condition warrants otherwise):

Abby got her Rabies shot last week and made it thru that fine (I separated the DHP no lepto or bordetella by a month) But the car sick was awful! I can't believe she could be sick on the way home too. Is there any training method to prevent this? We have as snoozer seat so she sits up high...My other dogs love the car.

my papillion has a problem with her vaccinations even with pre treating her so my vet and I decided to just do a vacination titer which determines her level of protection/ now morgan has not had any problems with his vaccinations yet

Maybe ask your vet for a medication like Dramamine...

Many vets are doing titers nowadays, but the initial vaccines and 1st boosters are needed during a pups first year to establish immunity. Then titers can be done yearly thereafter. (exception would be pups who are severely allergic and cannot finish out the first year vaccines: rare occurance)

Update for everyone on Chewie- it was actually a dexamethasone, not cortisone, steroid shot that he received, and he was back to 100% the very next day. He is doing wonderfully:) Luckily, he is done with all of his shots for a year, so it's nothing we'll have to worry about in the near future!

I lost my 4.5 lb Yorkie almost a month ago to vaccines- I was planning on getting her teeth cleaned and I was told she needed updated shots. After daily trips back to the Vet and Ivs, antibiotics, and the er vet, she could not overcome the damage. Her records show severe reactions to the vaccine. I was listening to the vet and doing what I thought was best for my little girl. I have missed her so much and will never forget her suffering and untimely death. This should have never ever happened.

Jackson also had a major reaction to lepto as a pup- never will he get it again. Actually I will do very minimal vaccines for the rest of his life now (got the 3rd DHPP at 16 weeks, then got rabies a while later, then did the DHPP booster and rabies booster on different days at 1 year old) But now that he's 3, will probably only do rabies vaccine every 3 years as required by law. Unsure if we'll ever get a DHPP booster again.

I've been thinking about the same for Teddy. We will do rabies as req'd by law for all three dogs because if not up to date they can be quarantined in a shelter. No thank you. Teddy had the same as Jackson. I'm thinking I'll do the DHPP booster one more time, but titer after that. I am just not sure I'm comfortable without another booster in a young dog plus Teddy has tolerated vaccines well (actually all my dogs have thankfully). The older dogs are done with all other vaccines except rabies.

Andy has problems with vaccinations. Just before he gets his shots the vet gives him a benadryl needle. He gets swelling and pain for a few days after. If she does not give him the benadryl it is worse. She sends me home with a syringe of pain meds. I always have a childs bubblegum flavored at home. I have to tell you good thing I do.

My sisters two chocolate labs got into a ground hive of yellow jackets. Those two dogs were covered in them getting stung all over. She called me freeking I was yelling at her two brush them off they want the dogs not you. I went by their weight and gave them the benadryl I can only imagine how they would have been without it. Their vet said "Good Job"

This is kind of where I am at. I may give him one more of Distemper, Parvovirus and Hepatitis around 4yrs old, so that would have been 3yrs since his last vaccines. But after that, it's a definite no way. I guess I'll decide for sure next year when he turns 4!
