Shot reaction! Izzy is now over a year old. I took her in 13 hours ago to meet a new vet to see about getting her spayed, and while I was there she was due for her rabies/distemper shot. This time she got the 3 year shots for both. While getting the (I believe) distemper shot she jerked away and some of the shot was spilled out. He gave her a half a shot more to make up for it. Now she is shaking and trembling big time, is getting stiff (very sore at site) and is losing her appetite and feels horrible! I called the emergency vet as it is 4:45 here, and they just said to bring her in, but did not sound convincing that they could do anything other than give her benedryl. She finally went back to sleep so I think will try to wait until the vet that gave her the shot reopens at 8am. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! |
They could give her a steroid to negate the effects of the vaccines.... I always get DHPP and then wait 4 weeks to get the Rabies... especially with small dogs... mine handle it better that way. As vaccines are strong enough to immunize 100 pound dogs... she probably didn't need more of the vaccine.... I'd talk to the vet about waiting a month to do the spay... when the vaccs are done working on her.... |
I think it would be wise to take her to the ER... the steroid can reduce the amount of damage done by possibly overvaccinating. (causes the immune system to overload.... not a good thing) |
Back from ER. Dr. said it was a severe reaction to pain, so gave her a combo anti inflammatory/pain med. Now she wont even come out of her carrier. I think she needs sleep. I know I do! Thanks, KJC for your responses. The vet was only 90+ so for an ER visit, not too bad. Goodnight (morning) all! |

Ziva needed her shots to be separated by a month because of such a terrible reaction to the first ones. Abby has done much better this way, there was almost no reaction to her Dhp(?) or last rabies, altho my vet did "spill" some on purpose, knowing how neurotic I am about too much vac.I don't do the lepto or bordatella unless there was a need. |
My Dexter had a pretty bad allergic reaction to his shots. About 2 hours after he got them, I noticed him rubbing his little body on the stairs on the carpet trying to itch himself, when I looked at him his eyes were swollen shut and he had hives everywhere. Also if I touched the shot site, he screamed in pain. He was wagging his tail and breathing fine though. I called the ER vet who told me to try benedryl 2mls (he was only 3.5 lbs) but I can't remember if its the one for children or infants. I think it's important, which one you get. I stayed up with him all night as he itched and scratched and his hives finally went away and his swollen eyes reopened. Now when he goes for shots, he gets a pain shot first (bc hes a baby the vet said haha) and he gets a shot of benedryl, then the vaccines. This has worked so far. He is 6 years old and has had 2 rounds of 3 year shots with no more reactions. Good Luck with your baby! |

So sorry Izzy had a reaction. I learned the hard way myself to separate the shots. From now on mine will be separated from each other. Hope she is feeling back to herself soon! |
