Puppy With Blood In Stool Hello, I have a 6 week old puppy who stopped gaining weight & has a small amount of blood in his stool. The vet found nothing wrong with him, no parasites whatsoever but did start him on antibiotics just because she didn't know what was wrong. Does anybody have experience with something like this? His littermate is gaining weight just fine & his stool is normal. I went to my regular vet's office but got a vet I haven't seen before so I'm not feeling real confident that he's getting the care that he needs. Any suggestions or experiences would be helpful! Thanks! |

He tested negative for parvo & I don't think he could have been exposed to it but I am going to get a second opinion. He finally gained 3 ounces today after not gaining for a few days but I'm going to go ahead & get a second vet's opinion. Thanks for your help, I wasn't sure if I was just worrying too much but something just didn't seem right about taking home a puppy without a definite diagnosis. |
Oh you didnt indicate they tested him for it in your first post so I didnt know. I still would get a 2nd opinion because he is extremely young, too young to have left the breeder yet and when they are so young they are very fragile. Thanks for updating |
It very well could be a parasite like coccidia or giardia. Those do not always show up on a regular fecal. My vet either does a float AND a smear or sends it out to the lab for more extensive testing...just to be sure. It's better to BRING a sample too instead of having them test at the vets office. Get some that has visible blood, that would help. As for the littermate not having it--he MAY have it but just not having signs. Some are hit harder than others by parasites, diseases, etc. He could have swallowed or chewed on something he wasn't supposed to, could be from GI upset (change of food, stress, etc). There are many possibilities. However, with a puppy that young they can become dehydrated or anemic quickly from bloody stool (especially if it is loose or watery-which you didn't mention). I would definitely keep pushing or switch vets until you get an answer. |
