My friend... My friends 6 year old female yorkie/poodle mix is pretty sick :( ... She is 6 years old and only about 5 lbs. The best way to describe her symptoms is she is walking like a baby deer... very off balance and sometimes her legs just stop working and she gets stuck in a position for a moment or she falls. My friend and her fiance took her to the vet which referred them to a neurologist and he said it was definatly something wrong with her brain and that it was bad. The neurologist told them the best thing to do would be to put her down bc not a good chance that they can help her and even if they could her quality of life wouldn't be that great... :( Has anyone on here heard or experienced something similar?? I just feel terrible for my friend and her baby... such a heartbreaking situation and I just couldn't imagine being in her shoes... |
That's so sad. Did the neurologist give a diagnosis? That may help people on here who may have experienced the same condition and the outcome. I will keep them in my prayers. |
I would get another opinion I have heard of those type of symptoms before and it end up being liver shunt and liver shunt can be treated. Im not saying they are not accurate but whenever you are given advice that extreme I would get a 2nd opinon |
Thank you, and no she hasn't told me if they gave her a definitve diagnosis.. just that it was bad :( .. what she told me was the neurolosigst said there is a 40% chance they couldn't help her at all and a 60% chance that they could help but not cure and she wouldnt have a good quality of life... she just told me that they decided to put her down.. they're doing it tomorrow. I just can't express how bad I feel for her and her fiance and their baby :( |

The dog did have blood work done and everything came back normal.. I guess that was to check for if she may have ingested some kind of chemical and im guessing to check liver function and some other things... |
I know... it just breaks my heart :( ... I told her that if she needed to talk I was here and also I didn't know if there was anything I could do but if she needed anything to let me know... I also reccomened her coming to YT for some support.. Idk if she will tho |

I am assuming they don't want to spend the money, or cannot afford to do the diagnostics. It can be very costly. Some conditions can be helped but without doing testing they would not know for sure. Very sad situation. |
Update :) In a last ditch effort the vet and my friend+her fiance have decided to try some medication... no guarentee it will work but the neurologist said he had a yorkie come in with similar symptoms about 3 weeks ago and it worked for him. My friend said she saw some improvement last night and when my friends furture father-in-law checked on her this morning he saw some improvement too! :) I'm feeling very optimistic and hoping she makes a full recovery! :) |
Sending prayers for this puppy to respond well to the medication and for an improved quality of life. |
I'm so glad to hear that your friend's dog is improving. Sending good wishes for them and their pup. You're a good friend. |
Please let us know the outcome. Sending prayers for your friend and her furbaby. |
Just checking in I hope all is going well for this furbaby. |
