Pixie is wheezing, sneezing, coughing. what to do for allergies? had to take little pixie in to see her dr last night. poor little baby has been wheezing on and off for about 2 days, sneezing during the day and coughing in the middle of the night while she's sleeping. her dr believes it is allergies. she had the same thing going on last year at the exact same time shortly after i adopted her, but it was more severe with a lot more coughing. she was on antibiotics and cough tabs and it cleared up within a week or so. last year, they did a series of radiographs of her trachea and said that it looked "absolutely perfect." her dr looked back at those again last night and said the same thing, no narrowing in size, etc. i was very thankful to have that news, especially since she is such a tiny weighing barely 4 pounds and was a puppy mill rescue. also great news that her heart sounds wonderful too. my dear little nika had terrible skin allergies, but i have never dealt with this kind of allergy. i'm guessing many of you have though, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. she is on 0.5cc of clavamox every 12 hours with a tiny amount of prednisone mixed in for anti inflammitory for 10 days. we started her meds last night when we got her back home. is there anything else i could do to get her through this and make her more comfortable? should i pretty much expect this to happen every year around this time? i have a humidifier running in our bedroom very close to where pixie and i sleep so hopefully that does help her. thanks for listening, i know you guys all understand the terrible feeling when one of your babies is not 100% well!!! |
We all understnad how bad it feels when one of our dogs is sick.Carrie, I have no idea on the allergies but you have a good Vet, so hopefully what was prescribed will soon do the trick. I have heard of giving Benedryl, but would not unless the Vet said to and the dossage. Hope the other little Pup is feeling better to. Have a good day, and stay well |
My neighbor's yorkie has terrible seasonal allergies and her vet prescribed meds to help with the symptoms...steriod and benedryl I believe. It sounds like you and your vet are on top of things....If her allergies are seasonal, keeping her indoors might would help. Hope she is feeling better soon. |
Awww poor Pixie. I am sure that the meds she is taking will help her. Prednisone peaks fairly quickly, so hopefully her wheezing will be controlled soon. Sounds like you are doing everything right for her. :) |
Hmmmm...if antibiotics "cured" it last year...then I'd suspect bacterial rather than allergy. That said, allergies can suppress the immune system when they flare, so I'll just mention that. Has asthma been ruled out? If it really is seasonal allergies, then I'd consider using Temaril-P or Atopica (requires ramp-up though) to manage the allergic response. |
thank you all for the responses! i will ask about benadryl for future reference, it never hurts to ask! pixie is tolerating her medicine pretty well and doing about the same.... ann - asthma was never mentioned but last year they did several xrays of her trachea and chest, would that be able to rule it in or out? that is a good point, i will definitelty ask her dr about it. pixie is very, very active and never gets out of breath and rarely have i ever seen her pant. the first "episode" she was about 7 months old and right now she is just over 18 months, i'm not sure if that's a factor. i am not familiar with either of those meds that you have listed for seasonal allergies but i will look them up and also see what her dr says about that as well.... last year, they suspected her to have kennel cough because i adopted her from a shelter. after she started meds, it cleared up and i have never heard another cough, sneeze, or wheeze out of her until a couple days ago. thankfully, she is not nearly as bad as last year and i hope it doesn't progress to that. thanks so much everyone for your input! i appreciate it so much! |
I hope your baby is feeling better today. Susan |
