Vet fitted an E. Collar after the Snip but?? Dustie had the snip on Monday..The Vet said he is to wear an Elizabethan plastic Collar for all time for a week. He managed to get it off twice..then we fitted it to his collar which is reasonable tight around his neck..but heck..he got the collar in his mouth and panicked..I hadto cut the collar off to free him..I really panicked..So Now I don't know what to do. He has been licking the stiches and making them sore..so I have tried various items of clothing to tie on him..to no avail..he gets them all off..and he is now getting really angry with me when I approach him..I really don't know what to do now..His castrated area looks really sore...The Vet saw him again yesterday..gave him some antibiotics..but said the Collar had to stay on...I daren't risk putting it on him again now..dare I. Please anyone..any advice..I am at my wits end... Chrisann.x |
Have you tried the inner tube style sold at pet stores? Could the collar go any tighter (nearly impossible to get their jaw in it if it's tight). Could try connecting it to a harness, but he could probably do the same to it. |
Order a Kiss-E Cone from Bo! They're custom-made fabric cones. Nilla had to wear the 'cone of shame' that the vet gave to us after her spay, but she slipped through it somehow and got it caught between her jaws! It was mortifying! The fabric cone is much more comfortable, not to mention a lot more pleasing on the eye! I think they run $19+. I will link you: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ne-collar.html She can ship them out quite quickly, and has the most wonderful customer service! I definitely recommend Bo's services and her product. |

I'm sorry your little guy is having such a rough time after his procedure, I am sending you a private message. Bo |
Have you tried some infant jammies ? the kind with the feet in them. You will have to remove them to potty him but I find them to work well . |

1 Attachment(s) The vet suggested clear deodorant around the area and it leaves a bitter taste in their mouth and dogs won't lick it more than once. Don't put it on the incision, but around the incision. You might want to put a little Neosporin on the incision; some comes with a numbing agent. Neosporin Plus Pain Relief Maximum Strength Antibiotic Ointment 1oz Reviews. Buying Guides & Consumer Product Reviews - Epinions.com. I'd ask my vet first though. I've also read that people have great success with children's onesie. You just put them on the dog backwards, with the tail sticking out the snap end. Those collars would be great to have on hand! |
2 Attachment(s) I just used baby onesies put on backwards on ZoE after her spay. We never used a collar of any kind. (I do think a soft collar is a great investment though to have on-hand in your first-aid kit in case of emergency). Here's how the onesie looked on in pic 1 and with her tail sticking through the middle snap that was left open, in pic 2. |

Use a Kong Cloud E-Collar I just got Pixie spayed a couple weeks ago. I ended up purchasing a plastic E collar, a Boobooloon and a Kong Cloud e-collar. The boobooloon was clear and my first choice but during the night, she managed to deflate it and get it off. It attaches by velcro. The plastic e-collar worked but just looked uncomfortable and she had a hard time eating with it on. The kong cloud was the one we ended up using most of the time. It attaches by using her own collar so she can't take it off! Awesome when you have a mischievous dog like her. And she can use it as sort of like a pillow. I ordered it from Amazon before her spay but you might be able to find one in stores. Hope this helps! |

Lilly was supposed to wear one of those cone things for a week after I had gotten her spayed but she had been so terribly miserable that I asked people on the yorkie email list that I'm on what to do. The baby onsies are what was suggested to me. I did that and have never looked back. In fact, to this day (almost 2 years later), Lilly absolutely loves to wear her onsies. |
If you secure the econe to a collar with string they can't get out of it. thats what I had to do with Emmett. You must keep him from licking, Emmett licked and I had to deal with an infection for 2 months. Ugh. :( |
