Who Knew? We made a terrible mistake with our Zoe this Thanksgiving. We gave her turkey. We never knew turkey could make a dog so sick. She was fine thanksgiving day and the next day but Saturday she threw up and then she became very lethargic. All we gave her was some white meat turkey, We thought it was like chicken. We took her to the vet on Sunday and the vet took xrays and blood work. She also put her on sub fluids because she was very dehydrated and gave her two shots She was sent home with antibiotics and pepsid. We are waiting to hear the results of the blood work. |
Thanksgiving dinner is a no no for our sweet yorkies. So sorry that your Zoe has been ill. Do hope she is much better now. |
oh, so sorry, I knew, my son is a Vet Tech and he always reminds all the family that Turkey is a NO NO for our dogs,he works in an emergency vet clinic and said that thanksgiving is one of the MOST busy nights in there due to people feeding turkey to their dogs... wishing your Zoe a quick recovery... |
What is wrong with turkey? I've never heard of this being an issue. I've fed my dogs turkey for the past 20 years without incident. I do always make sure my pup just gets plain white meat cut up, no gravy or anything, as that can cause stomache upset. But, I've never known turkey was a bad dog food...even many premium brands have turkey in them. |
my son said is the seasoning in the turkey that makes the dogs sick... if you take a piece of white turkey meat and boil it in plain water and give it to your dog is safe, but a piece of seasoned turkey can be very bad for the dogs.. that is all i know, I will ask him more when he comes home.. |

OP - I'm sorry your pup didn't tolerate her treat well. Sounds like she will be ok. |
I also didn't know turkey was a no-no. Roxi had just a couple of little tiny pieces. An hour later she threw it all up. My poor baby. Now I know better. |
It was four Thanksgivings ago that my Piccolo was in the emergency hospital for three days getting fluids for Pancreatitis. Turkey is nothing to mess around with, in my opinion. We did not even give Piccolo turkey, I just saw her lick a little turkey grease that was on a towel. It was a very awful way to learn how to be a better pet owner, poor thing, and just glad she survived. |
Hope she makes a ast recovery. Grease if it was basted, and sometimes they inject spices and fluid. Boiled Chicken breast and rice is all we will give. We keep all dogs off People food. I do not eat their food, and they will not eat mine. |
I'm really glad this was posted. Our Oz got some turkey from his grandpa about a month back and he was sooooo constipated for a few days. I had no idea turkey fat and the like wasn't good for puppies. From now on, Oz is in a turkey-free zone!! Personally, I don't like feeding my puppy ANY people food, but my b/f and his family are often giving him food. It make me angry  We have so many actual doggy treats around, there's just no need to give him table scraps and junk food. |

I'm shocked to hear this. Nutmeg occasionally gets turkey (no seasoning though) and has never had any problems. In fact for Thanksgiving she got turkey, carrots, squash, turnip and potatoes and loved it. She is also on a board certified home cooked diet (she's a picky little thing) and one of the recipes includes turkey although most of the recipes include ground lean beef and chicken (better sources of protein). Interesting to hear this though I guess.... |

Mine each had a very small portion with no problems, but i do not use spices in turkey and they were not given any fat or skin |
Holy Moly! I ground up turkey instead of chicken and put in their rice, dry food, poultry and canned food mix. So far, all five are flourishing. Too bad I read this after they ate the whole batch. I try to watch the dangerous food list carefully, but never new about this issue. I would love to hear what some of you are feeding. Keep in mind that I have three seniors and two adolescent Yorkies. The two oldest are toothless. It is a trick to find the best food for them. I am willing to pay for quality food. |
Jack must have a cast iron stomach.... he eats a little bit of just about everything we eat - excluding the really bad stuff like onions, grapes, raisins, and garlicky foods.... but we made him his own plate filled with turkey, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving this year and did the same for him last year. He doesn't like the cranberry sauce though - I think its the consistency. |
I am so happy I saw this my bichon had some turkey on thanksgiving.. and she threw up twice that day after eating it. :/... I didn't know what was going on. |

I have given turkey to my dogs for the past 20 plus years never had a problem, just plain white meat. Wow I have never heard of turkey being bad for them. |
I'm sorry your baby is sick. However, there is nothing wrong with turkey breast fed to dogs. It is one of the leanest sources of protein around and highly digestible. I would not feed skin or dark meat to a dog given the likelihood of triggering pancreatitis. But white meat turkey is lean and fine for dogs. My dog Barney is a two-time survivor of pancreatitis and he is permitted to eat turkey breast. |
We give our dogs a little of the turkey too. We give just the meat, not any skin, fat, or bone. We also only lightly season our turkey with some salt and pepper, so there are no odd seasonings involved. They just get a little bit as a treat too, not a bunch of it at any one time. |

Same here and none of mine ever gets sick.. |
Well the vet wasn't really sure if it was the turnkey or just an upset stomach. We have 5 dogs and they all ate the turkey, but Zoe was the only one with a reaction. All I know it that she was so sick for two days. Once the blood tests and the xrays came back normal I felt much better. Now is she back to her old self. |
Dont beat yourself up.. same thing happened to Smokey, but I didnt give him from the roasted turkey. I boiled the neck, giblets and wings with NO seasonings for stock and gave him that over the course of the weekend. Too much of a good thing per the vet. Still getting used to portionizing for such a tiny belly, but all is well again in Smokeytown. |
