Ugh.. The dreaded Kennel Cough Both my dogs have kennel cough right now. They are both on medicine, but they arent really getting over it. One of them sometimes vomits/coughs up bubbly fluid. Ive been told that them coughing this fluid up is better than it being in their lungs. Heres my problem. She vomits it up but doesnt fully spit it out of her mouth. Then she just swallows it again. Shes only done this maybe 3 times, but 2 of the 3 times, she kept it in her mouth. Anyone have any tips to stop her from swallowing it? Also, have any tips on getting multiple dogs over kennel cough? THANK!!:) |
Kennel Cough can be a pain. I once had it in six pups at once and it was a PIA. I don't really have any tips...just make sure none of them are getting sicker as it can sometimes lead to pneumonia. Hope it passes quickly! |
That sucks :( Jackson had KC twice. Luckily, both of ours were really easily treated and he seemed to get over them very quickly. I don't remember any mucus or any of that kind of stuff. I just remember the annoying coughing/gagging/hairball-throwing-up sounding noise, lol. It's a pain in the butt. :( I hope you get things sorted out soon! |
My pups had it earlier this year. I would not worry about her swallowing it back down as long as she is doing it purposely and not choking on it. Antibiotics won't really do a thing for it unless as secondary infection has developed. Mine both got really nasally after awhile and were both put on ABs (some types are definitely better than others). It really seemed to help them They also took Robitussin (I want to say the vet said no expectorant - can't remember). If they aren't on cough medicine, it's something to talk to the vet about. It seemed to help. Talking them in the bathroom while showering may make them feel a little better. Otherwise, as long as all secondary infections are under control, I be prepared to be dealing with it for up to a month... |
So sorry.................my baby had that shortly after I brought her home from the breeder. She was on an antibiotic "just to be on the safe side" but we had the humidifier running at night while we were sleeping and that REALLY helped!!!! Good luck..........I know how awful KC is! |
So sorry your pups are going through this right now. My girls are just starting to get over this crud. It made me so sad to hear them coughing, snorting, and sneezing. My vet did put them all on an antibiotic, just in case they got a secondary infection. Hang in there and looks like you received some good advice from those in the know. |
When I brought Cali home she had kennel cough and gave it to my older pomeranian. It took 3 months for them to get over it. I hope your 2 recover quickly. |
For the dogs who had it for a long time, were they on antibiotics the entire time? They are almost out of their medicine and Im not sure if I should get it refilled again. Are there any home remedies that help? I think I read somewhere about giving them garlic? |

As for the antibiotics, I don't know that they should be on the antibiotics a lengthy time....but speak with your vet about it. |
