Liver Shunt! Help Help! I am so new to this and not exactly sure where I should be posting this. If Im in the right section, awesome. If not, please let me know and I will re-post. I just purchased my little Sammie two weeks ago, shes about 10 weeks old now. On her 7th night with us I came home to find her dripping in sweat, barely coherent and barely moving. I rushed her to Bensfield where they did a simple blood test and came back not looking so good so they sent me to a hospital. We took Sammie right away and they proceeded to tell me they thought she might have a liver shunt. I was extremely surprised. I hadn't seen any issues with her at all, the day before was night and difference. They had given her some food and within five mins she was back to normal. barking jumping around. They wanted to keep her over night to do the Bio-lastic test(excuse the spelling if its wrong) which came back and said that her numbers were at 115 after eating and normal is at 20. Which then they told me they were 90% she had shunt. I'm so new to this. I havent even been out of my parents house for 3 months and I have had pets my whole life and never had to deal with anything like this. I am supposed to go in Wednesday to discuss surgery and diet plan. Its so hard to think my poor baby needs surgery when she acts perfectly normal, besides sleeping all the time but shes a baby!! Basically I'm asking for any info anyone has to give me. Or what specific things you think I should know walking into this. Drs said the next step would be a ultra sound? Does that sound right? I guess I just feel like Im walking into this blindly. Any info for me would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks! |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ver-shunt.html Here is a link to only one of the many threads about liver shunt. Ultrasound unless done by a very experienced technician is not the diagnostic of choice to determine extrahepatic shunts. Scintography is. Dr Tobias is a known expert in this field and the link to the thread I posted should have some details. I'm so sorry that your baby had high bile acid levels. It is recommended that pups are tested for BAT's prior to going home. Current thinking is that first BAT is done at 14wks and next one at 6months old. Hopefully you do have a health guarantee that protects against genetic defects, which LS is. It is highly advisable to go to the best specialists and surgeon you can find. If you are dealing with a general vet, you should ask for a referral to an internal medicine specialist, of if you can go to Dr Tobias go directly there. Please keep us posted on how everything is and the very best for you and your pup! |
My Gabby just had Liver Shunt surgery on the 26th and is doing well. The best thing you can do is educate yourself. Google- Liver Shunt and read as much as you can. There are different types and treatment will depend on the type. Yorkies are prone to this and have been treated successfully with diet and medication as well as surgery. There is a wonderful support group on Yahoo that can provide you with excellend information. I am so sorry you are dealing with this good luck to you and Sammy:animal36 |
How is your baby doing now ? How often are you feeding her ? She may be hypoglycemic from not eating enough times a day. These little ones need to eat several times a day while they are babies. Praying for your little one & Welcome to YT :) |
So sorry to hear you and your baby are having to go through this. Not to stir a pot or make this about money, but having only had her for 7 days, shouldn't the seller be liable for medical? Prayers for you and little Sammie |
So sorry that your baby is sick!!! I'd definitely go back to the breeder and at least get your money back. I'm going through the same thing right now with my little 8 month old girl. We're going to Dr Tobias at U of Tennessee, she's the best in the field for LS. |
Welcome to YT and I am sorry your baby may have LS. Sending prayers for you and your baby. |
