Please help Colby's eye won't open Please help. I have no idea what to do. I have two 7 month old yorkies, Colby and Bailey. Well all of a sudden, Colby's right eye won't open. I tried rinsing it with warm water, but still nothing. I did get a good look in it and it is beat red. My vet does not have an emergency telephone number and I will have to wait until morning to see him. Any idea what could me wrong or what I can do? The man at the pet store told us to put visine in it and to give him a puppy antihistamine. However, in reading the directions for the pill, it states that I should not give it to a dog under 20 pounds unless directed by a doctor. Please help. Thanks. |
I would call the ER number or take him there. |
There has to be an ER within an hour or two in PA. This is an emergency. You risk blindness if it's not assessed quickly. Eye problems go bad very quickly. Dont' put anything in it. Your pup is probably in a ton of pain and it sounds seriously injured. ER.. |

Here's another Gwynedd Veterinary Hospital (Lansdale,PA) |
Your dog needs to be seen as soon as possible and preferably tonight. The eye can be lost by any delays with this sort of thing. Please post updates. |
Oh, he's probably in pain and could be infected. Please get him in to the ER doctor now. |
Eye Problem Help Im guessing mostly like that it got scratched since you have two dogs (happens very often). Go to the pharmacy and ask for optic polysporn ointment at the pharmacist. Make sure its the ANTIBIOTIC FOR EYES! It will help lube it up and will ease a bit of the pain. You can use childrens benadryl as an anti histamine on these little guys too, although Im not convinced its allergy related if the other eye isnt affected. Either way it probably wont hurt. Make you get childrens benadryl, and get a syringe from the pharamcy as well. It needs to show ml. The dosage is 1ml per pound by mouth (if you dog is 2 lbs, it will be 2ml of liquid benadryl). Do not use pills. Hopefully it will heal on its own, but an ulcer could develop or he could need surgery, so as soon as you can, get your poor little guy to the vet. Hope that helps! |
Please take your dog immediately to the vet. None of us can see or diagnose your dog because we are not vets. This is definitely an emergency! |

Please do not go get any regular topical antibiotic ointment and put it into your dog's eyes. This needs to be evaluated by a vet. |

To the OP - please see a vet and disregard this person's advice! |
Again, please get this pup to a vet if you haven't already. Just commmenting again because the avoid is the WRONG DOSE of Benadryl. It is not 1ml/lb. This is a serious overdose. |
Praying your baby feels better and you can see the vet. |
This is an emergency, as others have stated. Do not put anything in your pup's eye right now that is not directed by a vet. Don't try to treat this at home or with over the counter meds. Anyone with an eye problem, please do not listen to bad advice and treat these things at home. Your pup could lose vision or the eye itself, and end up costing you more $$ and grief. I'm so glad I never hesitated to go straight to the doctor with all of Max's eye problems. |
