Bad breath and rotting loose teeth! Help My yorkie girl is only 4 y/o and for the last 2 yrs Ive noticed her breathe has been just horrible..like something died in her stomach! Ive had her teeth prof. cleaned once around 1 1/2 yrs ago. I brush her teeth 2x a week at a min I know it should probably be everyday- i also have petzlife toothgel which i dont give her often enough either. I did address this with the vet and he said switch to a vegetarian diet because maybe her stomach cannot process the proteins thus giving this foul odor. We switched and shes been on veg. diet for over 6 mnths and no progress. What else could it be??! Its driving me crazy I'm convinced it has to something to do with digestion and its rotting her teeth her front bottom teeth are loose but havent fell out yet. I dont even want her close to us and I feel so bad for it but because Im such a clean freak I just get grossed out with the smell and the "uncleanliness". Im due with my first baby any day now and really would like to get this issue under control. |
If her teeth are rotting and loose, she needs more dental work. Small dogs are prone to tartar, and some are genetically prone to have really bad dental problems requiring dental work every 6 months to a year. It is not unusual to have a cleaning once a year. Her breath will not improve until the rotting teeth are extracted. I would be very concerned about feeding a vegetarian diet based on a vet's hunch about digestion. If it were me, I would be looking for another vet and I would consult a canine dental specialist. |
Go to a board certified Vet Dentist. Best of luck |
my little beau had to have 16 teeth out , her breath was rank,,,, and teeth rotten, she has been in great health since,, it has to be very painful for them and she eats to well now lol , :animal-pa |
Yorkies are prone to bad teeth. Bad teeth causes bad breath.I brush Pao's teeth everyday since I had him at 12weeks old and still had to send him in for teeth cleaning and lost a tooth when they were cleaning it. |

My Brea just turned 5 but when she was 4 she had to had 14 teeth taken out....her breath had been awful too. I had just had a dental done a year before but they went fast. I now have some water additive and some gel to put on her teeth... my vet uses them herself with wonderful results. I'm glad dogs have 40 teeth.... |
