Anal Glands I'm not sure what to do. Tila went back for her follow-up from when she got the flush and antibiotics applied. She has been on two kinds of antibiotics since then. She finished them all and when we went back to get her rechecked, she still has an infection. The vet thinks that she is immune to the antibiotics she was on, is that possible? And she on now on a different kind of antibiotics and and the vet wants to see her once a week to express her glands and see if that will help. If that does not help she wants to talk about the gland removal. I'm at my wits end, I just don't know why Tila is having such problems with her glands. Is there anything I should be doing or? Is there any info I should be reading before hand if she gets her glands removed? Thank you. |
When the vet flushed them, did she put any medicine down there? What antibiotics has she been on? When she poops, is it firm or not? All vets are different. The ones that see my dogs and do this surgery prefer to have the infection cleared up first otherwise it is more difficult. Yes, you should know that in some cases the surgery can result in fecal incontinence. Also, didn't this pup have an anesthetic reaction? Which drug was it? She may need to go to a specialty hospital with an anesthesiologist on staff if you decide to do it. |
make sure you feed her as dry of a diet as possible!! This may not help, and you may already be doing this, but when their "poop" is very firm it's nature's way of keeping the glands expressed. There is normally still a little left to be expressed on grooming trips, etc. Hope this helps. |

I'm going to do lots of research here before we decide to do this if it comes down to the removal. Going to check into hospitals as well. Thank you. |

We had constant problems with my Wheaten Terriers glands. We changed foods (fish seems best) and I am very careful that she has no fatty or processed meats (husband shares:rolleyes:) lots of veggies- (green beans) and mostly I give her probiotics .Her butt and ears and skin have been clear for almost a year, she has not vomited or had loose stool either!! And she doesn't smell anymore!:D |
